A woman was left confused as she unpacked her food order from Tesco, only to find that the half leg joint of lamb she’d order had been substituted by something else

A woman was left baffled when her online order from Tesco arrived with one item substituted in place of a leg of lamb that left her jaw on the floor. Most supermarkets now offer customers the opportunity to order their groceries online to be delivered right to their doorstep.

This not only makes doing your weekly shop more accessible, especially if you don’t have a car, but also allows you to do the shopping from the comfort of your home, and thereby avoiding any crowds at the supermarket. However, it doesn’t always go as well as planned.

If the supermarket has run out of an item on your shopping list, you have the option to let them pick a substitute, often meaning a similar product but a slightly different brand or variant. While these are often very similar to the original product, the system can sometimes go wrong.

One shopper named Irene was left gobsmacked when her Tesco food order arrived at her door, only to find that the half leg of lamb she’d ordered for £8.50 per kilo had been substituted.

Instead of the half leg, she received a full leg of lamb, which originally would have cost her £45, or £16.50 per kilo. However, the supermarket had price matched it to her original order, meaning she had only paid a fraction of that for the substantial joint of meat.

“Ordered half a leg of lamb off Tesco for £8.50 and, because they didn’t have it, they’ve sent me a £45 whole leg of lamb for £8.50 instead… which is amazing, except I’m not entertaining Henry VIII,” Irene explained in her viral X post.

While Irene was clearly impressed by the great deal she’d received, she did say she was worried she and her family wouldn’t have time to finish it all before it went bad, as the screenshot showed the whole leg of lamb was set to last three days, whereas the half leg of lamb was said to last five days.

People soon took to the comments section to share their thoughts, as many were left impressed by Tesco’s substitute.

“And you’ve only got a few days to eat it,” one person stated. To this, Irene replied: “It’s in the oven rn [right now] we will do our best.”

Others suggested turning the leftovers into a stew or a curry, or freezing it to eat at another time. Meanwhile, another person said: “Last up to four days once cooked anyway, so best get practicing curries and open sammiches.”

“You poor b******,” another said. “Why would you even complain at that? Cut it in half and freeze it.”

To this, Irene replied: “I’m definitely not complaining, just a bit of a shock when half a lamb turned up on my step hahaha.”

Someone else shared: “Could always be worse…they could’ve done what they did to me and substituted my chicken for vegan chicken.”

Tesco has been approached for comment.
