Human hair can absorb oil up to 7–9 times its own weight That’s why the Kesakambali Foundation began recycling donated hair into powerful oil soaking mats to clean polluted canals in Gurugram before the waste reaches the Yamuna River
These mats are woven using felting machines placed inside floating barriers and lowered into waterways filled with grease chemicals and trash They trap organic waste absorb toxic oil pollutants and have already helped reduce BOD and COD levels by nearly 40%
And the innovation doesn’t stop there Once saturated the hair mats are recycled again into nitrogen rich agricultural mulch creating zero landfill waste 🌿
The idea was brought to India by Rahul Gupta in partnership with Matter of Trust But convincing people to donate hair wasn’t easy Superstitions backlash and fears of “kaala jadu” followed him everywhere
Still he persisted and has already recycled over 1,000 kg of hair
India exports nearly 3,000 tonnes of human hair every year Yet maybe one of its most powerful uses is not fashion, but protecting our rivers ❤️
