Before Rashee Rice was thrown behind bars, the controversial Chiefs wide receiver had surgery to remove loose debris in his right knee that was causing inflammation.
The surgery was performed a week before Rice was handed a 30-day jail sentence for violating the conditions of his probation, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Tuesday night.
The procedure was done in Dallas and Rice is expected to be sidelined for two months.
Rice did not have any structural damage to his knee, but the procedure was necessary in order to help relieve the discomfort he was dealing with in his knee.
The wide receiver is expected to be ready to take the field for training camp this summer, but now that he finds himself jailed, Rice won’t be able to get the medical attention and rehab that could have quickened his recovery surgery.
Rice was not aware that he would be sentenced for violating his probation when he underwent the procedure.
The initial injury occurred when Rice collided with Patrick Mahomes during a September 2024 game against the Chargers.
Rice had been on probation after he pleaded guilty to felony charges that stemmed from a car crash that injured multiple people in Dallas in March 2024.
Authorities said Rice crashed his 2020 Lamborghini Urus SUV on a Dallas highway, going over 100 mph, and then fled the scene shortly after.
More than a year after the initial crash, Rice pleaded guilty to one count of racing on a highway causing bodily injury and one count of collision involving serious bodily injury.
He was sentenced to five years probation, which he violated when he tested positive for THC.
Rice will spend 30 days in jail and is slated to be released on June 16. He will miss the Chiefs’ mandatory OTA mini-camp next month due to his incarceration.
