TGCSB Cautions Cricket Fans About Cybercriminals Selling Fake IPL Tickets Online

Hyderabad: The Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) said it had observed an increase in fake IPL ticket scams targeting cricket fans through social media platforms, fake websites, Telegram/WhatsApp groups, and unauthorised agents. Cybercriminals are luring victims with fake VIP/VVIP passes, heavy discounts, and last-minute ticket offers for IPL matches. In many cases, fraudsters collect money through UPI, QR codes, or bank transfers and either share fake tickets or disappear after receiving payment, Shikha Goel, Director, TGCSB, stated in a press release on Wednesday.

The bureau said that the ‘District app’ was the only official ticketing partner for IPL ticket bookings. It also pointed out some common red flags such as “heavy discounts on sold-out matches,” “Only few tickets left” pressure tactics, personal UPI IDs instead of official payment gateways, fake booking confirmations, edited payment receipts, and newly created social media pages with low followers.

TGCSB also requested people to follow safety tips before making full advance payment. The cyber security bureau asked to verify website URLs before making payment, avoid buying tickets from unknown agents or social media sellers, and never share OTPs, banking credentials or screenshots. The bureau also encouraged the public to report victims or suspicious cases immediately by dialling Cyber Crime Helpline 1930 or register complaints at cybercrime.gov.in. TGCSB requested citizens to stay alert and verify before making any online ticket purchase.
