The 2026 Formula 1 regulations are still being fine-tuned, and the new LED light system is a step being made towards safety.
Ahead of the Miami Grand Prix, the FIA and manufacturers approved technical updates, taking into account driver feedback, after F1 racers raised concerns regarding the way the electric motor’s status is signalled.
Rear LED lights have taken on a much broader and more informative role this year. The central light has been redesigned, additional ones have been introduced and now, most importantly, new colours. This makes it easier to identify specific situations like a rookie driver on track, or a different programme to the competition, as was the case with Aston Martin at the Barcelona shakedown.
Until last year, the lights only activated during the hybrid’s charging phase. This season, with a much more powerful MGU-K, they now indicate the operating status of the electric motor, with the number of flashes distinguishing between three different modes.
When the lights flash once, the MGU-K is supplying energy but not up to its maximum power of 350kW. That means the car can enter the clipping phase and start losing speed, so it is essential for the driver behind to be aware of what is going on.
When the lights flash twice, the MGU-K no longer delivers energy and the car uses only the internal combustion engine.
When the lights flash rapidly and continuously, the power unit is super-clipping, as the electric motor harvests energy to recharge the battery, working against the internal combustion engine.
It wasn’t easy enough for drivers to differentiate the flashing patterns due to low visibility from the cockpit, so the FIA tested a new signalling system during free practice at the Canadian Grand Prix.

What used to be a single flash is now a blue light, what used to be a double flash is now a purple light, and what used to be continuous flashing is now a yellow light.
When definitively implemented, the new system will give drivers a simpler indication on their rivals’ energy status.
