Bollywood Producer Amit Jani has dismissed the legal notice sent in connection with his upcoming film Kala Hiran, which is inspired by the black buck case involving actor Salman Khan, and said he has no plans to respond to it.
Speaking ahead of the film’s teaser launch, Jani confirmed that the teaser is scheduled to be released on June 20. Asked about the legal notice sent by Salman Khan, which he said was received on Monday, Jani described it as “illegal” and maintained that it contains no grounds warranting a response.
“We are not responding to it because there is nothing in the notice,” Jani said. “If they want to approach the court and the court permits it, then we will present our case there.”
Jani argued that filmmakers do not require permission from an accused person to make a film based on a criminal case. According to him, films based on such incidents are generally made with the consent of the complainant or affected parties rather than those accused in the case.
He also disputed claims that the matter remains sub judice. Referring to the black buck case, Jani said Salman Khan had already been convicted by lower courts and had served time in custody. He contended that while higher courts may continue to hear appeals, that does not erase the fact that convictions were delivered by the trial court and later upheld.
“The Supreme Court granted relief from jail, but it did not acquit him,” Jani said, adding that further proceedings in the matter are expected later this year.
The producer suggested that the timing of the legal notice was linked to the upcoming teaser launch.
“Our teaser is releasing on June 20. That is why they are reacting now,” he said.
Jani, who identified himself as a member of the Bishnoi community, also spoke about his long association with campaigns related to wildlife protection and the black buck case. He claimed that despite facing powerful legal opposition in the past, the courts had ruled independently.
During the conversation, Jani further alleged that he had faced threats while working on the film and claimed that security agencies had flagged potential risks to his safety. He said he currently has security protection and has informed authorities about threats allegedly linked to criminal gangs.
Discussing the legal notice’s demand that the teaser not be released, Jani said he would only comply with a judicial order.
“If a court stops us, we will respect that order. But why should I stop because someone’s lawyer has sent a notice?” he said.
Asked about the film’s release date, Jani declined to reveal details beyond confirming that the project is nearing completion and will release in the future. He said post-production work is currently underway.
Jani also rejected suggestions that Kala Hiran is a biopic of Salman Khan. He maintained that the film is centred on the black buck case and not the actor himself.
“This is not a biopic of Salman Khan. It is about the black buck,” he said. “If someone chooses to see themselves in that story, that is their interpretation.”
Addressing questions about imagery associated with the film, including similarities noted by observers between a character in the film and Salman Khan, Jani argued that clothing, accessories or visual references cannot be monopolised by any individual unless legally protected.
Kala Hiran is produced by Amit Jani and directed by Bharat S. Shrinate. While the teaser is set to release on June 20, the makers have not yet announced a release date for the film.
