Addressing a press conference in Markapuram on Sunday, he said the district was created to fulfil the long-standing aspirations of people in the backward western Prakasam region and for administrative convenience.
Expressing concern over fluoride contamination, Dinakar said Markapuram district ranks 14th in the country among fluoride-affected regions, with Kanigiri being the worst-hit area. He said completion of the Poola Subbaiah Veligonda Project is the only permanent solution to the district’s drought and drinking water problems.
Noting that the coalition government is closely monitoring the project, he said irrigation minister Dr Nimmala Ramanaidu has been regularly reviewing its progress. Once completed, the project will provide irrigation to 4.5 lakh acres and drinking water to 16 lakh people.
Dinakar said a detailed report on the district’s development needs, including early completion of the Veligonda Project, has been submitted to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. He also criticised the previous YSRC government for declaring the project complete before the works were actually finished.
He urged the government to merge Donakonda and Kurichedu mandals with Markapuram district and highlighted the region’s historical and cultural importance, citing landmarks such as the Cumbum tank, Sri Lakshmi Chennakesava Swamy temple, Tripurantakam’s Bala Tripura Sundari temple and the Ishta Kameswari temple in the Nallamala forests.
