Tamil cinema is in mourning after the death of legendary filmmaker and actor Bharathiraja after a prolonged battle with age-related complications. The ace director was considered one of the trailblazers of Tamil rural cinema. His storytelling prowess in bringing authentic rural stories to the big screen earned him prestigious accolades.
With his passing, the legendary filmmaker leaves behind a family in mourning that includes his wife Chandraleela, with whom he has shared more than five decades of life. Here’s what we know about Bharatiraja’s surviving family.
Who was Bharathiraja’s wife, Chandraleela?

Bharathiraja tied the knot with Chandraleela in 1974, long before he became one of the most influential filmmakers of Tamil cinema. Unlike the actor-director, who was known across Indian cinema and beyond, Chandraleela lived a quiet life, preferring to stay out of the limelight as much as she could. Yet, she was Bharathiraja’s constant, a rock of the family as her husband took his rising success in the industry in stride.
Bharathiraja often sang praises of his wife, describing her quiet presence as a source of stability and resilience through both his cinematic highs and personal tragedies. Even as she stayed largely out of the public eye, her husband and son, Manoj, often credited her as the family’s anchor.

One of the most memorable moments happened in 2004, when the Vedham Pudhithu director received the coveted Padma Shri for his invaluable contribution to Tamil cinema. At the felicitation, Bharathiraja reportedly took to the podium and acknowledged Chandraleela’s sacrifices for his career.

Bharathiraja and Chandraleela welcomed their first child, son Manoj Bharathiraja, in September 1976, and later in 1979, they welcomed their daughter, Janani Bharathiraja. While Manoj made a name for himself in Tamil cinema, his sister, Janani, has maintained a much lower public profile. Not much is known about Janani, except that she married a Malaysian national, Rajkumar Thambiraja.
On the other hand, Manoj followed in his father’s footsteps, making his acting debut in Bharathiraja’s Taj Mahal (1999), sharing screen space with Bengali actress Riya Sen. He later appeared in many films, including Alli Arjuna, Viruman, Annakodi, and Baby. He has also worked as an assistant director, filmmaker, and playback singer.
Bharathiraja never recovered from his son’s tragic death
Manoj’s life was tragically cut short last year when the actor suffered a fatal cardiac arrest. Manoj Bharathiraja passed away on March 25, 2026, at the age of 48. He is survived by his wife, Nandana, and daughters Arshitha and Mathivadhani. His death reportedly had a deep impact on Bharathiraja. His brother Jayaraj said that the filmmaker’s health deteriorated significantly after losing Manoj. In an interview with Cinema Express, Jayaraj had shared:
“Anna has been unwell for a few months now. He has not been able to cope with the loss of his son, Manoj Bharathiraja. He often looks at Manoj’s photos and breaks down. We even took him to Malaysia, hoping a change of place would console and heal him, but even there, his thoughts kept returning to his late son. Despite all the fame and money, he is unable to come to terms with this loss. He is slowly drifting away from his old memories.”

Bharathiraja reportedly died in the early hours of June 10, 2026, after a prolonged battle with health issues. He was reportedly admitted to a hospital in Chennai in December 2025 after experiencing breathing difficulties. Several industry stalwarts, including South megastars Rajinikanth, Mohanlal, and Cheeranjeevi, posted heartfelt tributes remembering the legendary filmmaker. Tamil Nadu’s superstar actor-turned-minister, ‘Thalapathy’ Vijay, personally visited Bharathiraja’s funeral, and on X, described his demise as an “impeccable and monumental loss to Tamil cinema.”
Remembering Bharathiraja, a trailblazer of Tamil cinema
Born Chinnasaamy Periyamayathevar in 1941, Bharathiraja was a blessing to the Tamil film industry. He transformed Tamil cinema by taking stories out of studio sets and into real villages. Beginning with trying out odd jobs to make a living, he eventually made his debut with the 1977 film, 16 Vayathinile. To this day, the film has been regarded as a landmark project in Indian cinema.
In his filmmaking career spanning nearly five decades, Bharatiraja directed over 40 films, including iconic projects that brought rural life, social issues, and human relationships to the forefront. His filmography includes some of the most legendary projects, including Kizhake Pogum Rail, Sigappu Rojakkal, Alaigal Oivathillai, Kaadhal Oviyam, and Mudhal Mariyathai. Bharathiraja received numerous awards for his contribution to Tamil cinema, including six National Film Awards, four Filmfare Awards South, six Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, and a Nandi Award. Apart from direction, Bharathiraja also acted in several projects. His vast discography is the reason almost everyone knew and respected him as one of the pioneers of Indian cinema.
Bharathiraja’s invaluable legacy will live on through the films he created, the artists he mentored, and the cinematic path he carved for future filmmakers.
