Madonna has detailed why she wants to spend her time ‘thinking and wearing clothes’, instead of being naked
Madonna has revealed that she no longer wants “to be naked”, because everyone else has taken her lead and stopped wearing clothes. The Queen of Pop will be returning to the charts next month with her new album, Confessions II – a follow-up to her 2005 release, Confessions on a Dance Floor.
The Vogue singer has never been a stranger to risqué, provocative stunts throughout her decades-long career, having released her own coffee table book, titled Sex, in the 90s. Just weeks ago, she straddled a speaker in the middle of Times Square as part of her pop-up performance, to promote her new era.
Looking back on her decades-long career in a candid new interview, the 67-year-old touched on the response to her most provocative moments when she was questioned over some of her most poignant lyrics, and what she was feeling while getting them down.
When asked about people who “tried to take her down”, she clarified who she was directing this to, explaining: “Narrow-minded people who are ignorant, who judge first before investigating. Society, basically. The ones that condemn me.”
“It used to bother me a lot, because I was just like, ‘I can’t believe they’re so stupid. They don’t get it. They don’t understand.’ I do a lot of provocative things, but there’s always a reason behind it and nobody bothers to investigate, which can make you want to give up on human beings.
“But you soon realise a lot of people don’t think critically. They don’t actually examine what they’re looking at, what they’re listening to. They’re not tuned in to the subtleties and the layers of meanings that exist. And they certainly don’t do it when it comes from a female.
“Picasso was a total s**t to women and behaved badly and was a spoiled brat and all those things, but he was a brilliant painter. People looked past all that because he made great paintings. I’m not comparing myself to Picasso, but when a woman does it, now people are more open-minded about women doing provocative things.”
As well as an incredible music catalogue with more hits than other singers could ever dream of, Madge has become known for pushing boundaries over the years. She is no stranger to stripping off for photoshoots on social media, and has even found herself in hot water with Instagram over some racier uploads.
“They’re open-minded about women being naked,” she added to Interview Magazine on how the reception to nudity has changed. “Because now everyone’s naked. Now I don’t want to be naked because everyone’s naked. That’s my nature. I want to do what people are not doing, which is thinking and wearing clothes.”
Madonna is currently gearing up for the release of Confessions II, which she described as a “love letter to dance music”. The album is set to drop on July 3, seven years after her Madame X offering.
It has been claimed that she could be bringing her Times Square pop-up to the UK for a string of dates, but the plans have yet to be announced.
An insider told the Sun that, while a “full-scale world tour” is not currently in the works for her new music, there may be some surprise shows on the way.
“Performing is everything to Madonna and she is going all out to make sure this era is one of her greatest,” a source claimed. “She’s currently mulling over a number of live show options for a handful of dates.
“Her last run of shows were all about her legacy, but now she’s reinvigorated to be an innovator.”
