Actress Olivia Wilde has revealed her dance with death on set and how co-star Walton Goggins come to her rescue
Olivia Wilde has praised co-star Walton Goggins for saving her life on set. The 42-year-old actress was starring in 2011 sci-fi Western Cowboys and Aliens when disaster nearly struck.
The star was shooting a scene on horseback when she was thrown from her animal. She lay in fear of being trampled, but thankfully was saved by Goggins. And she explained the moment on a recent podcast.
Speaking on the Armchair Expert podcast with Dax Shepard, she said: “Walt Goggins saved my life on that movie. I had a very bad horse accident, and he saved me.
“It was me and Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford galloping, like, full sprint across the desert with 40 horses behind us. And it was like we were leading the charge to fight the aliens or whatever.
She went on: “We were at that point, like two months in, and we got real cocky with it. And we were pretty competitive. We got to a part where I could see ahead of us that there was a large ditch, like a six-foot ditch.
“And I was like, ‘This horse is going to jump that ditch.’ And I’m on this western saddle, no helmet, because I’m playing like an old-timey lady.
“So sure enough, this horse jumps and bucks me off in the craziest way. I fell off. I hit my head and my back, and I was laying [on the ground] but, unfortunately, I was on the other side of this kind of lip of dirt, meaning that all horses behind couldn’t see me. And there was also a lot of dust.
“I remember having my ear to the ground and I could hear it and it sounded like thunder, like they were coming towards me. And I had the thought — it sounds so dramatic — but I thought, ‘It’ll be quick. It’ll be like, pulverised applesauce. Out.’”
Thankfully Goggins saw that was happening and acted quick to save her. Wilde continued: “Walt Goggins had seen [me] ahead of him and in a split second thought to turn his horse sideways right in front of me and let everyone kind of bash into him. And he’s a great rider, so he was able to handle that.
“People split the two sides around us thinking he had just gone insane, but he was protecting my body on the ground. And so I owe him my life. It’s crazy. He’s a real-life hero.”
Wilde has been promoting her new film The Invite, and has been appearing in numerous podcasts on the press tour for the upcoming flick.
Earlier this month, Wilde also opened up on her romance with Harry Styles. The duo dated four years ago, when he starred in her film Don’t Worry Darling. With Styles 10 years her junior, the actress admitted people were “f**king p**sed” but their relationship was the “loveliest”.
Speaking on Call Her Daddy with Alex Cooper, the actress and director confessed about the age gap issue: “It was crazy. I don’t know how much I understand it yet. That’s one of the factors that I never really felt like I fully… I don’t know, people were f**king p**sed.”
