Curry Barker’s Obsession unexpectedly turned out to be successful at the box office. Featuring Michael Johnston and Inde Navarrette in the lead roles, the supernatural horror film was praised for its fresh concept and performances. While audiences were eagerly waiting for its OTT release, the movie has finally arrived on Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, and Fandango At Home.
However, netizens are confused since the Apple TV version has been mentioned as unrated, and the other two are listed as R-rated, which refers to the theatrical cut.
What is new in the unrated cut of Obsession?
Ever since it was reported by multiple outlets that the Apple TV version of Obsession has been listed as unrated, netizens were eager to check out the additional footage. A Reddit user shared a screenshot of Apple TV, which shows that the film is available for rent at USD 19.99. While the user screenshot stated that the Apple TV version was unrated, another person later posted a screenshot, where the rating was changed to R.
A user also wrote, “You all do know the difference between the theatrical and unrated is literally only 5 seconds right?” One of the reactions also opened up in brief about the runtime, as it says:
“I just watched it, it’s not too different, instead of 1hr 48min with 53 seconds it’s instead it’s 1hr 49min with 3 seconds. The only difference is the car scene like the director said. You can hear Sarah gurgling trying to breath after Nikki is done pounding her head and you can also hear her gurgling when Nikki is talking to Bear.”

A Reddit user, who watched both versions on a digital platform, opened up in detail about the differences. The user wrote that the introduction is a little different, where the logo of Rialto Distribution plays for 30 seconds before the Blumhouse logo in the R-rated cut. However, the unrated version replaces the Rialto logo with Universal Pictures for 40 seconds. The user clarified that the runtime difference is only because of the logo timing and added:
“The car scene is “100%” identical in both versions: 23 head bashes to the brick – 15 on screen – and 8 off screen with a tiny bit gurgling of Sarah and that is the “R” rated version!”
‘Sarah’s’ death scene was edited by Curry Barker to get an R-rating

Before its theatrical release in 2026, Obsession premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival. One particular sequence from the film created headlines, in which ‘Sarah’s’ head was repeatedly smashed into a steering wheel by ‘Nikki.’ However, the response from the MPAA forced Curry Barker to make some changes as the board said that the film would be rated NC-17 instead of R.
Curry Barker eventually edited the head-smashing scene to some extent. Barker said in an interview that he was initially dissatisfied with making the cut, saying that the audience at the TIFF loved the scene. However, Barker changed his opinion with time, saying that the impact of the moment is still effective and gruesome. Addressing the possibilities of a director’s cut, he said:
“There’s an alternate ending that we shot. There’s an entire monologue in the car where that kind of got cut for timing. So I’d love to explore a director’s cut one day that just goes as long as we want it to.”
While some reports claimed that Obsession was edited in some other international markets, the movie created headlines in India after the CBFC removed 38 seconds, including a nude visual, a graphic intimate scene, and an extremely violent scene in the second half.
