EXCLUSIVE: The Great British Bake Off bosses have pulled out all the stops this Summer to make sure filming can continue in record breaking temperatures
Filming for The Great British Bake Off is underway and bosses have gone to extreme lengths to make sure the show can go on despite the heatwave. Filming was able to continue last week despite record breaking temperatures and people being too to “avoid” non essential traveling the UK.
Fans, aware of when the Channel 4 series normally films, have been speculating that surely the tent has had to stop. But the Mirror can reveal filming is going ahead with the planned schedule and hasn’t stopped thanks to some extra measures from the makers Love Productions.
A show source said: “Every measure that could be taken has been, to make the bakers comfortable. The lighting gaffer from the crew who’s in first every morning, opens up the tent, takes down the sides and gets airflow moving before everyone arrives.
“Earlier in the run, when temperatures were the opposite and it was freezing, he was doing the same thing in reverse, arriving early to put the heaters on and warm the tent up before the bakers and crew got in. Production runners have also kept everyone going in the heat by handing out ice lollies to bakers and crew throughout the day.”
Another Channel 4 source said the tent’s location in Welford Park, Berkshire, also has another advantage as during lunch breaks and between challenges, bakers and crew cool off by paddling in a beautiful stream on site.
During filming in the final weekend of May a “welcome breeze” saved the bakers and their creations from crumbling, or from judges Paul Hollywood and new recruit Nigella Lawson from overheating or looking too sweaty on screen.
The source added: “There was a breeze and with the sides of the tent down thanks to the lighting gaffer, it created a natural airflow through the space, almost like a wind tunnel.
“In fact, by the end of the showstopper bake they actually had to put the sides back up to stop the bakes being blown over!”
Bake Off is expected to return in the Autumn, with the 2025 and 2024 series both starting in September.
This year fans are excited to see the appearance of Nigella, who replaced Prue Leith as a judge. After being unveiled as a new member of the line up, Nigella said: “I’m uncharacteristically rather lost for words right now.
“Of course it’s daunting to be following in the footsteps of Prue Leith and Mary Berry before her, great dames both, but I’m also bubbling with excitement.
“ The Great British Bake Off is more than a television programme, it’s a National Treasure – and it’s a huge honour to be entrusted with it. I’m just thrilled to be joining the team and all the new bakers to come, I wish the marvellous Prue all the best, and am giddily grateful for the opportunity!”
The show will once again be hosted by Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding.
