Hollywood star Matt Damon has opened up about a major career opportunity he wishes had worked out differently. Decades later, he still looks back on a collaboration that missed the mark: working with celebrated Indian filmmaker Shekhar Kapur on his 2002 film, The Four Feathers.

Speaking at The Odyssey Mumbai event on Saturday, Matt Damon revealed that Shekhar Kapur had long been a director he deeply admired and wanted to work with. When asked to name an Indian filmmaker he would love to collaborate with, Damon immediately pointed to Shekhar. Reflecting on the past, he explained that Shekhar was highly sought after by actors at the turn of the century. He shared, “The filmmaker starting out that everyone wanted to collaborate with was Shekhar Kapur.”

Damon further admitted that he was really upset when he found himself unable to be a part of The Four Feathers. Explaining the reason behind why he couldn’t do the 2002 film, the actor revealed that a prior commitment to his iconic action franchise kept him away. Damon mentioned, “I think I was signed up for the Jason Bourne movie.”

Despite missing out on the project over twenty years ago, Damon made it clear that his desire to collaborate with the acclaimed director has not faded over time. Describing the lingering feeling of the missed opportunity, Damon stated, “I guess he’s always been on my list, and so I’d like to have another go. That’s like a 20-year-old sort of debt I’ve been carrying around in my body. That’s it.”

Damon was in Mumbai to promote his upcoming project, The Odyssey. Based on Homer’s epic poem, the film traces the long and treacherous voyage of Odysseus, the Greek king of Ithaca. Matt Damon takes on the titular role of Odysseus, while Anne Hathaway plays Penelope. The movie boasts a star-studded cast that also features Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron.
