
Hanoi: Sixteen Indian tourists who survived a boat accident off Vietnam’s Phu Quoc Island that left 15 people dead have been discharged from hospital and are returning to India, the Indian mission said on Sunday.
The accident occurred on Saturday when a speedboat carrying 36 people — 32 Indian tourists and four local crew members — capsised near Hon May Rut Ngoai. Twenty-one people, including 17 tourists and all crew members, were rescued.
The Indian Embassy in Hanoi said, “After obtaining medical treatment, 15 survivors of yesterday’s tragic boat accident have been discharged from hospital and are travelling back to India.”
“Of the two patients in critical care, one has been discharged and is travelling back to India. The other is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Phu Quoc,” it added.
The embassy said its teams, along with officials from the consulate, were present in Phu Quoc to assist the affected individuals.
All 15 victims have been identified and their bodies recovered. According to details shared by the mission, 10 of the deceased were from Tamil Nadu, three from Andhra Pradesh and two from Kerala, including two women.
The cause of the accident is yet to be established.
Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung has ordered an inquiry into the incident and directed authorities to fix responsibility, according to local media reports.
