Tom Cruise has undergone a huge transformation to turn into ‘most powerful man’ Digger Rockwell in new film trailer as he praises film for being able to ‘challenge’ him
Tom Cruise is pretty much unrecognisable in the trailer for his new film. The Hollywood leading man sports thinning grey hair and a paunch in the trailer for comedy-drama Digger.
It’s Tom’s least recognisable role since he wore a fat suit and prosthetics in 2008’s Tropic Thunder. The star donned a wig that made it look like his normally luscious head of black hair had thinned out into a grey comb-over, and a fat suit to give himself a sizeable pot belly. Completing the transformation with a strong southern accent, the actor makes the full transformation into eccentric oil baron Digger Rockwell in Alejandro González Iñárritu’s new movie.
Fans were quick to point out how different Cruise looked in the film. One called it his “biggest physical transformation”. Another said the film had “that Tropic Thunder vibe”, referencing Cruise’s unique look in that film too. A third was impressed by the trailer, saying: “He’ll probably get an Oscar this time”.
A fourth nodded to Cruise’s usually youthful appearance. They said: “Seeing an old Tom Cruise is wild.” Though Cruise is 64-years-old, many have commented on how he continues to look younger, especially in action films such as Top Gun: Maverick and the Mission: Impossible films. Cruise has previously attributed his looks to a combination of disciplined diet and exercise.
The upcoming film will hit cinemas in October this year. It follows Rockwell, dubbed the “most powerful man in the world“, whilst on a mission to save the world from ecological disaster, having previously contributed to the incoming climate catastrophe with his oil rigs.
According to the film’s synopsis, Rockwell discovers that his company may have triggered an ecological disaster in Greenland that could lead to nuclear war. As such, he “embarks on a frantic mission to prove that he is humanity’s saviour”.
Cruise has praised the film for “challenging” him. He told the Hollywood Reporter: “I have never had something that could challenge me in this way and neither had Alejandro when we went in, ever. When you see this film, it’s totally original.”
The film also features John Goodman as an unnamed President of the United States, Riz Ahmed, Sandra Huller and Jesse Plemons. Cruise was first told about the film seven years ago, when Iñárritu pitched it to him across several days of conversation.
The actor told audiences at an event in LA: “I’m listening to everything that’s in his mind, so that I can understand that, and then I know how to contribute to it, and bring that collaboration together. It was beautiful.”
He added that there was “nothing better” than to “stand on the edge of a clidd” and agree to do something like Digger. He called the film a “hell of an experience”.
