Music legend Bonnie Tyler died earlier this month at the age of 75. Funeral plans for the star have now been revealed – with fans invited to take part to help celebrate her life.
Fans of Bonnie Tyler have been invited to line the streets of a small Welsh town to pay their respects on the day of her funeral. Music fans were saddened earlier this month when the music legend died at the age of 75.
The chart-topping singer had been hospitalised over a month before her shock death – having undergone emergency surgery for a perforated intestine on 6 May. She was then place in a medically induced coma, but later suffered a cardiac arrest and needed to be rescusitated.
Bonnie – who was born Gaynor Hopkins and is survived by her husband, Robert Sullivan – woke up from the medically induced coma on 15 May, but died on 8 July due to complications caused by her medical battles. A funeral has now been announced to take place in Skewen, Neath Port Talbot, next month – with fans invited to bid farewell to the Total Eclipse of the Heart icon.
On Friday, an announcement was made by William Pressdee Funeralcare on behalf of the singer’s family, explaining plans for a “celebration of life” in honour of the singer – as well as wider funeral plans.
A statement reads: “Resting at William Pressdee Funeralcare, Mumbles until she returns to her home, Fernhill, on Saturday 15th August at 3.30pm – those who wish to pay their respects are invited to line Newton Road, Mumbles from 3.15pm.”
The statement continued: “A Celebration of Gaynor’s life will be held at Swansea Minster (St. Mary’s Church) on Monday 17th August at 12noon. Gaynor will then return to her ‘hometown’, and travel through Skewen at approximately 1.20pm en route to a private family service of committal and farewell.”
The family of the star has also invited fans to donate to two charities that Bonnie was a patron of in lieu of flowers. The charities are the Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital for Wales, and Cerebral Palsy Cymru. The funeral home added: “Her legacy lives on in the timeless songs that made her a legend.”
Earlier this month, the family of the Holding Out For A Hero singer announced her death after weeks of medical struggles. The statement, announced on 9 July, said: “Bonnie’s family and team are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away last night in hospital in Portugal as a result of the illness that she was being treated for.
“We will issue a further statement shortly but for now ask for privacy to deal with this tragedy.” Her official website later shared details of her funeral plans – and also highlighted some tributes issued to the singer following her death.
Welsh star Catherine Zeta Jones – who is a cousin Bonnie’s widowed husband, Robert – was among those paying tribute. Taking to Instagram, the Wednesday star shared a snap of herself posing with the chart icon.
In a heartfelt post alongside the image, she wrote: “My heart is broken with the news that our dearest Bonnie Tyler has passed away. Bonnie was married to my cousin and has been such a part of my life.”
She continued: “We are photographed here together the night before my wedding. She sang and rocked it at my wedding. An extraordinary woman with vocals to match. A one of kind artist, who so easily could have been a comedian because she was one of the funniest people I ever met.”
She added: “Thank you Bonnie for the joy you brought so many. Sleep tight beautiful lady. We shall forever ‘Keep A Welcome In The Hillsides’ of Wales for you. Sending my love to Robert and the family. God Bless.”
While The Prince of Wales described Tyler as a “proud Welsh icon” in a tribute to the star – writing: “Her extraordinary voice and unforgettable music touched millions around the world and will continue to inspire generations to come.”
