The West End legend and BBC Radio 2 star recalled meeting David and Victoria Beckham at Windsor Castle and revealed why a comment from the fashion designer left her stunned
Elaine Paige has revealed she was left shocked by a comment Victoria Beckham made to her. Back in November, the BBC Radio 2 presenter received her Damehood for services to charity and music during an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle.
Also included in King Charles’ Birthday Honours List last year was David Beckham, in recognition of services to sport and to charity.
In support of him receiving his Knighthood by King Charles, the former footballer was joined by his wife Victoria and parents Ted and Sandra.
Looking back on the day, Elaine admitted she was “shocked” after receiving a compliment from the fashion designer.
Speaking to Sara Cox on BBC Radio 2, the 78-year-old said of Victoria: “She looked me up and down like that and gasped and I thought, ‘What have I done wrong?’
“And she said, ‘You look absolutely stunning’. I was shocked to have such a compliment given to me by Victoria Beckham.
“And then I remembered, I said to her, ‘Well, what do you think absolutely makes this outfit?’ And I held up my little handbag, which was a Victoria Beckham handbag, I mean, how lucky was that?!
“And she looked at it and she said, ‘Oh, that makes me feel very happy’. So yeah, I got ten points from Victoria Beckham,” she recalled.
Speaking further about the ceremony in an interview with Woman’s Weekly magazine, Dame Elaine said David and Victoria were “absolutely charming”.
“I’ll never forget the investiture at Windsor, there was a real buzz in the air,” she shared.”It was also the occasion when David Beckham received his knighthood, right after me.
“Victoria was there too, and they were both absolutely charming.” Previously speaking to The Metro, the West End legendalso recalled making King Charles laugh during the ceremony.
She shared: “He was up on a dais and I’m particularly short. He leant down beside my left ear and said, ‘Keeping your hand in, are you?’.”
When it was suggested the remark was “saucy”, she went on to say: “I said, ‘I’m working on a new album – I’ll send you a signed copy, Your Majesty, when it’s finished’.”
She claimed that the King “roared with laughter”, before cheekily adding: “I might actually send him a signed copy.”
Meanwhile, after receiving his Knighthood, David said as part of a lengthy statement to reporters: “The monarchy has always been very important in our family – my grandparents, my parents, my kids, myself, the royal family have always played a huge role and I’ve always had huge respect for them.
“Especially when I travel around the world and people want to talk to me about our royal family, and that shows how much respect people have.
“To be here today, to receive a knighthood from His Majesty, the King, it’s pretty surreal.
“I was just hoping I would get it all right! You get walked through it and told what the protocol all is and obviously, to see His Majesty, the King stood there and receiving me and being as elegant and charming as he always is, it’s such a special moment.”
