Mandy Moore had tied the knot with Ryan Adams in March 2009. The duo shared a considerable age gap at the time of their wedding, with Mandy being 24 years old and Ryan being 34. A few years later, the couple announced that they were separating.
Mandy was losing her sense of being in the years that they were together. She had developed an “entirely unhealthy dynamic” of codependency, feeling devastated, lonely, and controlled as the days went on. According to Mandy, the abuse that she faced was too much to bear.
For those who don’t know, the actress has admitted to Ryan being emotionally and verbally abusive towards her throughout their marriage. Soon enough, she realized that she could no longer continue in that way. During an episode of comedian Marc Maron’s WTF podcast, she said:
“I was living my life for him. I had no sense of self. I felt like I was drowning. It was so untenable and unsustainable, and it was so lonely. I was so sad. I was lonely with him.”
It is worth noting that this was the first time that the This Is Us actress spoke about her rocky marriage since Ryan Adams was accused by six more women of different types of abusive behaviour. This included psychological and emotional manipulation as well as sexual misconduct. Mandy confessed that her relationship with Adam had begun about a year after her mother told her father that she was leaving him for a woman with whom she was having an affair.
At the time, Mandy was on tour in Minneapolis in 2008, when she went to see one of Ryan’s shows, who had been in town for a gig, alongside her band. Recalling the experience, Mandy said, “As a 23-year-old impressionable woman, I was really taken by him. I had never met someone who had that lens in that world.”
A year after this, she went on to marry Ryan. She revealed that her accelerated relationship with Ryan was a way of “steadying myself” after the emotional upheaval she faced with her family. She said that she felt like a “smitten mitten.”

It was Ryan Adams’ promoter who announced that the rocker had pulled out of his tour dates. They wrote:
“Due to circumstances beyond our control, the upcoming Ryan Adams European Tour has been cancelled. We apologize to all those who bought tickets and were excited for those shows. Refunds will be processed automatically, and if you have any questions, please contact your point of purchase. Ryan is doing ok and working hard to finish the new album trilogy. New music on the way.”
Following the announcement, Ryan reposted the statement and wrote, “Tough times. Bean sick. Fall tour cancelled.” A while before the revelation, he had revealed on Instagram that he was selling his belongings since he was “broke.” Some of the things that he put up for sale included guitars, studio equipment, and a Cadillac. A part of his emotional statement can be read as:
“I’m broke and sick and tired and defeated, but my heart is blasting with hope and love and riff optimism, and I appreciate anybody who can give these treasured things a new life…Now I’m going to go sit in the sunlight with my cats and cry because I need to and I’m not sure how many more times I can hit this wall. When is it enough?”
