When one ban led to another
Nearly two decades later, Sikkim expanded its campaign against disposable waste.
In 2016, the state government prohibited the use of packaged drinking water in government offices and at official events. It also banned Styrofoam and thermocol disposable plates, cups and cutlery across the state.
These products had become common in both towns and villages because they were inexpensive and convenient. But convenience came with an environmental cost. Lightweight plastics and thermocol occupied valuable landfill space, were difficult to recycle and contributed to an expanding waste stream that the state could no longer afford.
