Beverley Callard has revealed that the side effects of radiotherapy are “getting worse” now that she has finished treatment. The actress, 69, announced earlier this year that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer and, following a few setbacks, she completed a total of 10 sessions last week.
Now, the soap legend, who is best known for having starred as Rovers Return landlady Liz McDonald on Coronation Street, has admitted that she is finding it very odd to adjust to life now that constant medical intervention has suddenly disappeared.
Speaking in a new video posted to Instagram, she said: “Do you know what struck me? It’s so strange. I’ve now finished radiotherapy. When you’re going through it, everyone is on the phone to you all the time – nurses ringing you, then aftercare and everything. I finished last Thursday and suddenly – silence.
“The side effects are getting worse, which I didn’t really expect. But it’s the silence more than anything, you’ve got all these people pampering you more than anything and then suddenly it stops. It’s really strange.”
Followers rushed to the comments section to support Beverley, who is also known for her role as Flo Henshaw in Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps, and admitted they could relate to the way she felt about the whole thing.
One said: “I heard that happening to a friend of mine… You look fabulous. I love your outfit, it’s butiful on you, and another wrote: “Omg just gone through all that never had one nurse call me. When I tried to get them. Never called back. Lucky you Bev.” A third said: “Yes that happened to me once treatment finished so did the calls. You are doing great Bev.”
Just after finishing her radiotherapy, Beverley, who recently relocated to Ireland along with her husband Jon McEwan so she could star in the RTÉ soap Fair City, explained that she had been taken aback by how she felt post-treatment but medics had told her that it wasn’t the end just because she had completed radiotherapy.
She said: “Well, what a weekend. I’ve finished radiotherapy for now, last Thursday. And in my naivety I thought ‘well that’s great’. “More often than not, I’ve done really well. Sometimes feeling a bit poorly and etcetera, but not too bad at all. This weekend, oh my god, I’ve felt dreadful. My skin on my chest and everywhere is now so sore.
“I’m putting all sorts of things on. Aloe vera, loads of lotions and potions, and I’ve been so nauseous, and almost like morning sickness. I’ve only been sick a couple of times, but I feel dizzy, I feel worn out.
“To be honest, I’m in shock. It’s funny because a nurse did say to me ‘It’s not actually over. Really, it’s the beginning when you sort of finish your treatment’.
“So I understand what she meant now, and another lady said to me ‘Beverley, you’re still cooking’ and I understand that now as well. My skin is so hot, and it feels hot inside as well,” the Corrie favourite went on.
“So I’m coping, and I’m trying hard, but I do have to rest a lot, so I’m going to research vitamins and health foods. I am eating healthily, although my appetite is gone. But yeah, I’m going to do lots of research. So anybody else going through it, just remember, don’t expect too much of yourself.”
