Hyderabad: City police commissioner V.C. Sajjanar highlighted the importance of taking proactive safety measures across all stages — from the installation of Lord Ganesha idols to processions and the immersion proceedings — to prevent any untoward incidents during the upcoming Vinayaka Chathurthi celebrations.
He was briefing police officials and idol makers at a coordination meeting here on Thursday, following a recent interaction with representatives of the Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Samithi.
Sajjanar recalling that nearly 23,000 idols were installed in the city police commissionerate last year, during which four accidents occurred during transit. He instructed Idol Makers to strictly adhere to safety norms right from the crafting stage to avoid any mishaps this year.
In line with discussions held with the Bhagyanagar Ganesh Utsav Samithi, he stated that the maximum height of idols be restricted to 16 feet.
He directed idol-makers to implement proper fire safety measures at workshops, ensure safe electrical wiring, and maintain clean premises free from hazardous chemicals. He assured that the police, in coordination with government agencies, would facilitate necessary basic infrastructure for them.
Sajjanar said dedicated entry and exit routes were being designated for the safe movement of idols from major manufacturing hubs such as Dhoolpet, Jalpally, and Mailardevpally into the city.
He advised against transporting massive idols during peak traffic hours and instructed transporters to inform local traffic police in advance to obtain clearance. To monitor law and order as well as transport arrangements effectively, idol-makers were directed to regularly share booking details with local police officials.
Advance information regarding the arrival schedule and transit routes of idols to their respective pandals must be provided to the police, Sajjanar said and explained the modalities of transport of large idols.
The meeting was attended by senior officials Tafseer Iqbal, D. Joel Davis, Kajal Singh, Rahul Hegde and J. Raghavender Reddy.
