Chennai: The DMK has approached the Supreme Court seeking immediate directions for the release of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu by making Karnataka implement the July 28 directions of the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC), which was subsequently affirmed by the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA).
Represented by A K S Vijayan, Secretary of the DMK’s Farmers Wing, a Miscellaneous Application in Civil Appeal No. 2453 of 2007, sought urgent directions for the implementation of the judgment of February 16, 2018, and the enforcement of the directions issued by the CWRC and CWMA.
The applications, settled by senior advocate and DMK Rajya Sabha member P Wilson, also wanted the court to ensure a flow of 3,500 cusecs per day at Biligundlu for the period of 15 days commencing from date of the order by the Supreme Court, and to make good the shortfall in compliance from July 29, onward.
The petition sought a direction to Karnataka to make good the accumulated backlog of about 9.46 TMC due at Biligundlu as on July 26. computed on the pro-rata / distress-sharing basis, by ensuring releases of about 7,000 cusecs per day at Biligundlu for 15 days;
The DMK wanted a direction to be given to the CWMA to monitor the releases from the reservoirs of Karnataka and the water flows at Biligundlu on a day-to-day basis and to report compliance to the Supreme Court.
According to a statement issued by the DMK in Chennai, the application highlighted the severe hardship faced by lakhs of farmers in the Cauvery Delta due to the non-release of water by Karnataka despite the binding directions issued by the statutory authorities constituted under the Cauvery Water Management Scheme and sought the urgent intervention of the Supreme Court to protect the livelihood of the farming community.
The DMK has also prayed to implead itself and CWMA as parties to the above appeal in the Supreme Court.
