Prince William joked that Prince George, who turned 13 last month, finds him and mum Kate embarrassing during a candid chat at the Commonwealth Games

Prince William has revealed that Prince George is like any other teenage boy – and that he is embarrassed by his parents.
George turned 13 last month, officially becoming a teenager, and in September will start at the £63,000-a-year Eton College. In a rare royal engagement for all of the family, George, along with siblings Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, joined the Prince and Princess of Wales for a family day out at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The family of five watched the netball semi-final match at the Hydro arena before heading to the Team Wales base in the city centre.
There, Louis was then invited to update the board displaying Wales’ medal count to reflect two recent golds, and he duly stuck a large “7” sticker over the “5” to loud applause.
Team Wales chef de mission Gethin Jones also asked the children: “Would you like to see mum and dad on a tandem in the velodrome later?” But George immediately replied: “No.” Kate, who was sat beside him, burst out laughing while William replied, admitting: “We embarrass you enough as it is.”
Others they spoke to were identical twins Abigail and Emily Roper, who made Commonwealth Games history by winning bronze medals in gymnastics within hours of each other.
During their discussion, the conversation turned to Louis’ own sporting endeavours. Kate turned to her youngest son and said: “Louis, you’re perfecting your handstands on carpets, aren’t you?” He replied ruefully: “Charlotte says it isn’t very good.”
Each of the children was presented with a soft toy of Gwen, the Welsh dragon mascot, and all five were handed goodie bags containing the Welsh cycling outfit.
The family also fitted in a visit to the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in the east end of the city, where they met the six-time Olympic champion himself on Saturday and watched some of the action on the cycling track – alongside the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh. And at the end of the afternoon as the Wales family headed home, Sir Chris was spotted accompanying the family to their car.
While William and the children climbed inside, Kate was seen in deep conversation with the Olympic champion cyclists, with both being public figures who have received cancer diagnoses.
The six-time Olympic cycling champion, 50, revealed back in September 2023 that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer. In October 2024, Hoy shared the news that the disease had spread to his bones and that it was terminal.
Meanwhile, Kate revealed she had been diagnosed with an undisclosed type of cancer in early 2024 and underwent chemotherapy treatment before revealing she was in remission in early 2025. In 2024, Sir Chris was one of the specially invited guests to Kate’s carol concert at Westminster Abbey after revealing his prognosis.
The former champion cyclist has spoken about how exercise has helped him since his diagnosis. He told The Big Issue : “Exercise is a big part of my dealing with my cancer. There’s numerous studies to show that exercise can improve the efficacy of the cancer medications. It can improve your time to relapse.
“If it was in pill form, it would be hailed as a miracle drug. Actually, for my diagnosis, it took a long time to find any positivity or opportunity from that really difficult situation. For me, that was saying maybe we can change attitudes to Stage 4 cancer.”
