Sir Elton John is determined not to take sides in the Beckham family feud despite hosting Brooklyn and wife Nicola on his luxury yacht during their South of France holiday, insiders claim.
Brooklyn, 27, and Nicola, 31, were invited by Sir Elton, 79, and Furnish, 63, after enjoying a similar trip with the couple last year.
An insider said: “Elton has absolutely no interest in taking sides. He knows that family relationships can be complicated. He simply wants to be a loving godfather to Brooklyn and that will never change. He cares about them all and hopes that, in time, things can heal.”
It comes as David and Victoria narrowly avoided coming face to face with their estranged eldest son after both parties ended up spending time in Saint-Tropez on the same day.
Posh and Becks came within minutes of Brooklyn, 27, who is holidaying with his godfather Elton and the singer’s husband, David Furnish, aboard their superyacht moored off the French Riviera. The Beckhams, including son Romeo, 23, his girlfriend Kim Turnbull, 24, and daughter Harper, 15, are staying aboard their own yacht off the famous Pampelonne beach.
Both groups headed ashore when the near-miss occurred. A source said: “It would have been the first time they had all come face to face for a long time. I think everyone is probably quite relieved it didn’t happen, given the current bad blood. It would have been incredibly awkward.”
Like Brooklyn, Elton famously experienced painful family rifts of his own. He was estranged from his mother, Sheila Farebrother, who once hired an Elton John lookalike to attend her 90th birthday party. The pair eventually reconciled before her death in 2017. The singer also had a difficult relationship with his father, Stanley Dwight, who died in 1991 aged 66.
While ashore, David and Victoria enjoyed dinner with NBA legend Michael Jordan and his wife, Yvette Prieto. The former England captain struck up a close friendship with Jordan after moving to Spain and famously chose the No. 23 shirt when he signed for Real Madrid in 2003 as a tribute to the Chicago Bulls star.
Brooklyn, meanwhile, was spotted strolling through Saint-Tropez with Nicola and Furnish as they enjoyed ice creams together. The near-miss comes after Brooklyn’s explosive claims that his parents had been trying “endlessly to ruin” his relationship with Nicola.
He alleged they had attempted to “bribe” him into “signing away the rights” to his name before his wedding and claimed Victoria “hijacked” his first dance with Nicola and “danced inappropriately on me.”
“I do not want to reconcile with my family,” he said at the time. “I’m not being controlled, I’m standing up for myself for the first time in my life.” Victoria has since appeared to address the rift, saying: “We’ve always tried to be the best parents that we can be. And, you know, we’ve been in the public eye for more than 30 years right now, and all we’ve ever tried to do is protect our children and love our children. And that’s all I really want to say about it.”
