Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May are returning to The Grand Tour. Two years after the trio departed the Amazon show, it has now been confirmed that the original hosts will be back together.
However, details about their exact role on the show are not currently known. However, it’s reported that they will reunite to introduce the new hosts to the programme’s viewers.
This year, it was announced that YouTube stars and motoring enthusiasts, Thomas Holland and James Engelsman, would be joining trainspotter and content creator Francis Bourgeois as the new hosts of the show. But now, boss and co-creator Andy Wilman has shed light on the upcoming series, which he says is “coming soon”. Speaking to 3Bs radio at the Buckingham Literary Festival, he said: “We’ve got three guys coming soon with a new Grand Tour, and we’ve got behind them. We’re really supporting them.”
Speaking about Hammond, May and Clarkson, Andy, who is also an executive producer of Clarkson’s Farm, went on to say: “Our guys are in the shows doing cameos, so we’re wishing them well because we do want to pass that baton on.”
Shedding further light, he continued: “When those three (Clarkson and co) go away, you can’t parachute in three new, good presenters who are funny. That’s like describing the show over the phone to an alien — ‘You just need three funny blokes, and they muck about,’ it’s not going to work.”
However, although Jeremy has been replaced, he has previously offered his support to the new hosts of the programme. He said: “There’s no point hiring somebody who ‘likes’ cars. Because that’s not enough.
“I would get three complete unknowns. Start small, like we did. They’ve got to be absolute petrolheads. I’ve got to be able to show them a picture of a quarter of a door mirror from any car ever made, and they’ve got to know what it is. That would be my advice.”
Meanwhile, speaking to Radio Times previously, he said: “I’ve seen the guys being chosen in the early days, and I’ve seen some of the stuff they’ve been doing and it’s very, very good. It’s different because they’re three completely different people to us. But they’re bl**dy funny. You shall see.
“But no, I’m pretty confident it will work. I mean, touch wood, from everybody’s point of view. We all want it to work, and I’d love the idea that the Grand Tour carries on.” Speaking about filming the new series, which airs on September 4, Francis said: “Since completing the filming of the series, I haven’t stopped replaying every moment in my head.
“It has made me laugh, made my heart race and my stomach turn… Remembering the tent I shared with Thomas and James, filled with sulphuric farts whilst Angolan jackals snooped around outside. It feels as though it was a dream, but knowing we will get to share our adventures soon makes me so incredibly excited!”
James added: “We took on the West African Desert. We contended with fighter pilots. We even decided to challenge an entire nation’s legal system by protesting from the mountain tops. In doing so, the three of us learned our true strength: How to accept defeat gracefully.”
Meanwhile, Thomas said: “I figured someone would be there to hold our hand the whole time. Nope. We were on our own in some absolutely wild environments in very, VERY questionable cars. What did we learn from this experience? Only that we have very poor decision-making skills. When you watch in September, expect a good laugh. And maybe a few butt clenches…”
The Grand Tour returns on September 4.
