Scott Eastwood has revealed that he almost came to blows with Shia LaBeouf on set, before Brad Pitt stepped in to break them up.
The 40-year-old shared the screen with the pair in war film Fury in 2014, which followed the story of an American tank crew in the final weeks of World War 2.
He unpacked his efforts on the flick, directed by David Ayer, on the latest episode of the Armchair Expert podcast, when host Dax Shepard asked how it was to work with the Transformers star.
“Look, Shia is clearly tormented and maybe has some stuff going on,” Scott replied. “It was tough, there was an incident that happened, I’ve talked about it. Brad Pitt broke up a tense moment.
“He’s very method, from what I recall, he pulled out one of his teeth before we even started shooting…
“But then he cut himself and I remember thinking, ‘Okay, this guy’s crazy, I’m just going to keep clear from this guy because I don’t play this game. You go and do that’.
“There’s plenty of ways to do a performance in a movie and be professional also.”
Scott, son of Hollywood icon Clint Eastwood, clarified that the incident in questioned happened midway through filming, but shared that everyone “had moments with Shia”.
He continued: “One day he was having an episode and thought that I shouldn’t be spitting tobacco on the tank, which was in the script.
“Finally I just said, ‘Enough is enough, f**k you, stop pulling your s**t and I’m going to whoop your ass.’ He got froggy and everyone broke it up…”
Calling out his behaviour further, the Fast X star insisted: “Everybody is contributing, everybody is doing a thing, but you can’t stop the train. It’s a moving train. Grow the f**k up.
“The director wants you to do something – if it’s something crazy then maybe that’s too far – but be a collaborative…
“It’s funny, the film industry attracts psychopaths because it’s art and business, and they intersect.”
Fury attracted a star-studded cast, with Jason Isaacs, Jon Bernthal, Logan Lerman and Michael Pena also in the line-up.
However, Shia’s antics clearly stayed with many of his castmates in the years since, after it was alleged that he “refused to shower for weeks on end” in a bid to “better understand how his character would’ve felt” in the trenches.
Logan later reflected on his behaviour in a chat with GQ, reportedly recalling the moment he began cutting his face backstage.
He said via the Guardian: “We were in make-up and they were putting cuts on Shia and I said, ‘Yeah, yeah, it looks good.’ And Shia was like, ‘No, it doesn’t look real’.
“Then he walks out into the hallway and says, ‘Hey man, want to see something fun? Check this out…’ and he takes out a knife and cuts his face. And for the whole movie he kept opening these cuts on his face. That’s all real.”
