A 72-year-old woman, the wife of a retired Army captain, was allegedly murdered by her domestic help following a dispute over missing jewellery in Haryana’s Panchkula, police said.
The victim, Neera Mehta, wife of retired Army captain Manmohan Lal Mehta, was reported missing after she failed to return home. The case came to light when her husband approached the police to report her disappearance.
In his complaint, Manmohan Lal Mehta told police that some gold jewellery had gone missing from their residence and that his wife suspected their domestic help, Sunita Devi, of stealing it. Neera had gone to Sunita’s nearby residence to confront her over the suspected theft but never returned.
Police later found Neera Mehta’s body concealed on the rooftop of a house near the domestic help’s residence. CCTV footage allegedly showed Sunita Devi and her son moving the victim’s body and hiding it on a neighbouring rooftop.
Sunita Devi, her husband Shankar, and their son Raja were arrested within 24 hours of the murder on Monday.
According to the preliminary investigation, Sunita was allegedly angered by repeated accusations of theft. Police said an argument between the two women escalated into a physical altercation, resulting in Neera Mehta’s death.
The three accused remain in police custody, and further investigation is underway to determine the exact sequence of events and gather additional evidence.
