Chennai:Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, Udhayanidhi Stalin, challenged the TVK government to answer the questions raised in the petition demanding a discussion in the Assembly on the Cauvery issue, pointing out that Karnataka government had already said that it would not release water for Tamil Nadu in Cauvery.
Udhayanidhi Stalin told media persons on Thursday that the agricultural budget presented by Minister Vinoth in the House had no substance in it and only praised Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay to the skies repeatedly and said ‘let the government answer the questions on Cauvery in the House if it has the courage.’
The regime of the TVK in the past three months had been a big disappointment as it had not found answers to many issues like the Mekedatu dam controversy, farmers’ loan waiver, non-release of water for undertaking Kuruvai cultivation in the Cauvery basin.
He said all members of the DMK in the Assembly had turned up wearing black shirts to the House in protest against the Government apathy toward farmers in solving their problems.
Even after the Karnataka government had openly said that it could provide Cauvery water, Chief Minister said that he could go and hold talks, though his counterpart in Karnataka had asked him not to go over, the Leader of the Opposition said.
Pointing out that Vijay had not said anything on the Mekedatu issue so far, he said the DMK had submitted a plea for an adjournment petition to the Speaker to discuss the Cauvery issue on Friday and the impact of the farmers.
Expressing hope that the Speaker would give an opportunity to discuss the issue in the House, he said that everyone was eagerly waiting to see if the Chief Minister would speak on it on Friday and answer the questions raised by the opposition.
On the agricultural budget presented on Friday, the DMK leader said the Minister had broken a tradition by praising the Chief Minister to the skies and reading out a long speech. Nothing was worthwhile in the Budget, he said.
