I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! star Scarlett Moffatt has shared five budget-friendly summer holiday activities to keep kids entertained at home, from creating a ‘Costa del Garden’ to hosting a kitchen disco
With six weeks of school holidays stretching before families, I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! star Scarlett Moffatt, who has a three-year-old son named Jude and is currently expecting her second baby, has shared her ideas to keep youngsters occupied this summer. Her first recommendation involves creating a ‘Costa del Garden’ – transforming outdoor areas into miniature beach clubs complete with towels, sunglasses, refreshments and a summery soundtrack.
After the little ones have sampled a taste of the Spanish coastline from their back gardens, the 35-year-old recommends recreating another holiday staple – kids’ clubs – at home. This allows dedicated periods for arts and crafts, games, dancing, snack breaks and downtime to keep youngsters engaged and banish boredom.
The enjoyment needn’t stop at mealtimes, with Scarlett proposing turning teatime into tapas. This enables children to participate in preparing Spanish-style nibbles, fruit kebabs, vibrant beverages or even an ice-cream bar. It satisfies both their minds and growling stomachs.
Scarlett’s top 5 recommendations
- Create your own Costa del Garden. Get Gemini to help theme the day around your children’s ages, from seaside-inspired activities to beach games.
- Recreate the holiday kids’ club experience at home. Let Gemini create a structured schedule so you’re not constantly searching for the next thing to keep them occupied.
- Transform teatime into a tapas experience. Gemini can provide simple, wallet-friendly suggestions using ingredients you’ve already got in the cupboard.
- Introduce holiday-style entertainment with a kitchen disco, family quiz or mini talent show.
- Plan a quick family escape. When cabin fever strikes, provide Gemini with your location, budget, children’s ages and available time, and it will recommend a straightforward day-trip itinerary that keeps everyone happy without breaking the bank.
Recreating holiday entertainment within your own kitchen or lounge offers another method of bringing a taste of overseas breaks to your home. A kitchen disco, family quiz or miniature talent showcase can transform an average afternoon into something resembling an evening abroad.
Lastly, Scarlett recommends having a straightforward escape strategy. When everybody needs to leave the house, venture outdoors and discover.
Scarlett has joined forces with Google Gemini to assist stressed parents in using AI to bring holiday magic into their homes this summer. She explained: “Jude is only a toddler and already gets bored easily, so I can only imagine how tricky the school holidays can get.
“Gemini is like having a creative helper in your pocket, giving you ideas that work for your budget and your family and taking some of the stress out of summer planning.”
With the school break now underway, nearly half of parents (48 percent) have already endured the dreaded “I’m bored” complaint from their youngsters, while 42 percent have faced the daily question “what are we doing today?”, research reveals.
Google Gemini’s study found that an overwhelming 82 percent of parents experience pressure to keep their children occupied throughout the lengthy six-week summer break. Over three-quarters (78 percent) find it challenging to discover activities suitable for varying ages, interests and energy levels.
Financial concerns emerged as a major sticking point, with 46 percent identifying cost as the most stressful aspect of keeping youngsters entertained. However, money isn’t the sole obstacle – 60 percent admitted that generating fresh, imaginative ideas proves the most difficult element of the holidays.
This pressure brings considerable parental guilt along with it. A quarter (25 percent) confess to almost always feeling remorseful about not doing ‘enough’ with their children during the summer months, while 84 percent experience guilt at least occasionally.
In response to this, the tech giant has introduced ‘Gemidorm’ – featuring AI assistants that help transform ordinary spaces into affordable, exciting family getaways.
The research reveals that children’s favourite aspects of holidays are frequently straightforward and easily replicated nearer to home, with swimming (51 per cent) and beach trips (35 per cent) proving particularly popular.
Kids’ clubs and discos (29 per cent), sampling exciting new cuisine (25 per cent) and enjoying quality family time (18 per cent) also appeared amongst their preferred holiday pastimes.
Through the AI assistant, parents can request immediate suggestions customised to their family, from activities based on their children’s ages and hobbies, to arrangements designed around their budget and whereabouts.
This might include an afternoon kids’ club timetable, a Spanish-influenced snack menu utilising ingredients already available in the fridge, or an affordable day trip.
Laurian Clemence, Head of Product Communications at Google UK, said: “The summer holidays should be full of fun, not six weeks of parents trying to magic up new ideas while the snack cupboard disappears before their eyes. Gemini is designed to help with exactly those everyday moments.
“Whether you need a holiday-inspired menu, low-cost day out, a kids’ club-style schedule or a quick activity that works for different ages, Gemini can help turn ‘what are we doing today?’ into something simple, fun and doable.”
