Even in the worst of times for the Mets, their mascots have never wavered in bringing delight to fans.
Now, one of them is finally getting her moment in the sun.
On Friday, the Mets announced that Mrs. Met has been elected to the Mascot Hall of Fame, becoming the first female mascot to earn the honor in a barrier-breaking moment.
Mrs. Met will join Mr. Met, who was elected in 2007, in the Hall, which recognizes the most prominent mascots in sports and entertainment and those that have made major contributions to teams, communities, and mascots overall.
“Mrs. Met has been a beloved part of the Mets family for decades and has inspired fans of all ages with her energy, kindness and unwavering love for baseball,” said Katie Haas, executive vice president and chief of ballpark operations for the Mets in a press release. “Her election to the Mascot Hall of Fame is a historic milestone, not only for the Mets organization, but for mascots across professional sports. We couldn’t be prouder to celebrate this well-deserved and long overdue honor.”
The Mets will now be the first team with two mascots in the Hall.
Mrs. Met made her debut at Shea Stadium on Opening Day in 1975, when she and Mr. Met became baseball’s first mascot couple.
She was originally introduced in Mets publications and promotions before her first appearance, and thereafter became a mainstay of the team’s identity alongside Mr. Met.
Formerly known as “Lady Met,” Mrs. Met made a comeback in 2013 after years away from the spotlight.
Mrs. Met joins South Carolina’s Cocky, BYU’s Cosmo, Minnesota’s Goldy, and the Broncos’ Miles in the eleventh Mascot Hall of Fame class.
The announcement was made on “Good Morning America” Friday.
