The rift between the Telugu Film Industry Employees Federation (TFIEF) and the Telugu Film & TV Dancers Association, led by Ms. Sumalatha, appears to be widening, with the Federation issuing a fresh letter announcing non-cooperation with the Dancers’ Union.
In the letter, the Federation stated that it would no longer support the Dancers’ Union or take up its issues. It also alleged that the Federation’s advice was being ignored, despite the involvement of Megastar Chiranjeevi, and objected to the continued defiance of its decisions.
The Federation also raised concern over dancers’ unions for not revoking suspension of some of its members. It made it clear that the remaining 23 affiliated crafts would not extend support to the Dancers’ Union or its members. The Federation has further stated that it would not negotiate wage-related issues on behalf of dancers, asking the union to address them independently.
“Camera, editing and fighters’ unions among others will not support the Dancers’ Union from now onwards,” the Federation stated in its communication.
The dispute, which initially emerged as a disagreement between choreographers Jani Master and Sekhar Master, has now escalated into a larger confrontation between the Federation and the Dancers’ Union. Attempts at mediation by the Labour Commission have reportedly failed to resolve the differences.
The Federation has also issued notices to the Dancers’ Union, raising questions about whether the latest action will force the union to reconsider its stand or further escalate the dispute.
“Dancers’ Union is part of the Federation and should abide by its decisions. Otherwise, they could face consequences,” says Rajeswar Reddy, former general secretary of the Telugu Film Industry Employees Federation.
He points out that the Federation is affiliated with the Film Employees Federation of South India (FEFSI) and the All India Film Employees Confederation (AIFEC).
“In simple terms, if Jani is signed for a film, workers from the Federation’s 23 affiliated crafts across South India may refuse to cooperate, making it extremely difficult to complete the project,” he says.
Rajeswar Reddy also criticises what he describes as an increasingly independent attitude among some choreographers. “A few choreographers think they are heroes themselves. It is like disowning your parents after becoming successful. Jani is disrespecting the Federation, and that is not acceptable,” he adds.
With the Federation now formally announcing non-cooperation, the dispute could have wider implications for film shootings if the two sides fail to reach a settlement.
