Good Morning Britain’s Katy Rickitt has been a staple on screens for several years – but who is her real-life husband?
Journalist Katy joined the long-running ITV show way back in 2012 as a news correspondent, and has covered a range of topical and breaking news stories ever since.
Away from the programme, Katy is married to actor Adam Rickitt, who is best known for playing Nick Tilsley on ITV’s long-running soap Coronation Street from 1997 to 2004.
But when did they first meet? And what heartbreaking losses have the couple faced? Here’s everything we know about Katy and Adam’s romance.
Adam on meeting Katy
Katy and Adam first met when Katy interviewed Adam back in 2011 on GMB. And according to Adam, it was “love at first sight” for him.
So much so, that after knowing her for just one day, he rang his mum to tell her Katy was the woman he was going to marry. But although Adam says he immediately knew Katy was ‘The One’ for him, he wasn’t sure she felt the same.
Appearing on Loose Women, Katy revealed she “felt it too” but “panicked” at the start of their romance as things moved so fast. She said: “The reason he says it was [love at first sight] for me and not for her – it actually was for me as well.
“He told me pretty much straight away ‘I love you’ and then introduced me to his mum within a week without telling me about it. I almost slightly panicked a bit.” Three years later, the couple tied the knot in a winter wonderland wedding in December 2014.
Adam’s health condition
Katy and Adam’s romance hasn’t been without heartache. Adam is unable to have children due to an autoimmune disorder he was diagnosed with when he was just 22.
The actor suffers from Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS), which according to the NHS is a type of arthritis. In Adam the long-term condition affects his spine and can cause other areas of the body to become inflamed. It can also cause male infertility.
Opening up about his infertility on Loose Women, Adam said: “I always thought I was going to have fertility problems. I never pictured myself with children. I could never explain to you why.
Katy comes from North Yorkshire and a big, family-oriented family, so I did say to her very early on, ‘I’m not sure what my fertility is going to be like.’”
When it got to the point of them getting engaged, Adam got himself tested – but the results were not the words he wanted to hear. He shared: “The doctor said you usually have one hundred million sperm in ejaculation – you have three.
“I had zero fertility which was scary because to say to someone ‘I’m not sure we’ll be able to have children’ was really nerve-wracking. I was worried I’d be denying her something.”
Katy is so in love with Adam that when he told her she “didn’t bat an eyelid”. Explaining her stance on the sensitive subject, she said: “I married Adam and anything that came after that is a bonus… I love him and what happens thereafter, happens thereafter.”
The couple have decided not to go down the IVF route and are happy living life together and being mum and dad to their pet dogs.
“We knew it would be a difficult and unlikely process because of the position we’re in, so we decided to make use of the other things we can do,” Katy said. Adam added: “There are parts of life we’ll miss out, we’re not naive.
“We tried to experience things other people couldn’t – careers. I love acting, Katy loves presenting and journalism, we have a business together, we have the dogs, so we don’t feel like we’re lacking in giving our love to something else.”
Adam and Katy’s heartbreaking losses
In December last year, Adam and Katy were left devastated when their beloved four-legged family member Daphne sadly died.
However, just a month later and the couple revealed that their other dog Tallulah also sadly passed away. Taking to her Instagram, Katy uploaded a montage of pictures of her and Tallulah over the years.
In the caption, she said: “The day we’ve been dreading. Today we said goodbye to our beautiful baby Tallulah, making the horrific decision to send her over the rainbow bridge.
“I thought Daphne’s sudden death was hard but having to make this choice is long-term a blessing, short-term a curse. T had a brain tumour and slowly that and the drugs she was on for it were chipping away at her and although l’d have kept her preserved for a million years she was in a lot of discomfort and a slope to being in real agony.”
She added: “I’ve spoken to many of you about soul animals recently.. she was mine. That doesn’t mean I loved her more than the others… they are our babies… but somehow she slipped over a line, it’s like we imprinted on each other and gradually we shared and preempted the same emotions, knowing each other inside out.”
Adam and Katy’s new family addition
Earlier this year, Katy revealed she had welcomed another four-legged friend into her family with Adam. Taking to her Instagram in May, she uploaded a montage of clips of their new dog Taormina. She wrote in the caption: “Oh my goodness just 2 weeks of you in our lives little Taormina Jones!!
“How did we ever live without you eg thank you for being the missing piece of our jigsaw and for all the wonderful love you bring us and Dexter. @mybully_squad we love you forever too!! And this will always be your song baby girl.”
