R Madhavan Criticises Eating During Movie Screenings Says Theatres Arenât Restaurants

R Madhavan continues to hit the headlines for his comments in interviews. Known for his candid and thoughtful perspectives, during one of his recent interviews, he criticized the practice of eating (especially snacks/meals like panipuri) during a movie screening in a theater.  He made the comment in the context of the audience turning “brutal” with respect to movies in the age of multiple distractions and the availability of too many options.

“These days, the audience give their three hours to a movie. They commute in cars, the husband’s choice may not be to the wife’s liking, the kid wants to watch Spider-Man. On top of it, they can eat from the comfort of their seats. In my opinion, if you want to eat well, you should go to a restaurant,” the actor told M9. The actor described the disruption of someone ordering food, having it served in the middle of the film, and how this distracts from the viewing experience.

Many filmgoers endorsed his views, agreeing that serving food during a movie is as disruptive as someone checking a phone in the next seat. His transparent and grounded views about movie watching experience reflects his honestly on the film industry.

Madhavan further added that cinema and sports are the only two spheres where the report card is written by the layman. A scientist or an industrialist is tracked only by experts, he implied. “The first review of Alai Payuthey (2000) was published only a week after its release,” he remembers.

Recently seen in the biographical drama GDN, Madhavan has previously acted in these Hindi films: 3 Idiots, Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein, Rang De Basanti, and Dhurandhar. In Aditya Dhar’s spy thriller Dhurandhar, he delivered an acclaimed performance as intelligence chief Ajay Sanyal, a role inspired by Ajit Doval.
