Jenna Ortega, Ariana Grande, Kelly Osbourne And More! Is Hollywood Bringing Back The 'Bony' Trend?

When it comes to fashion and what’s “in”, Hollywood has been no stranger to bringing old trends back. While mostly celebrated, the industry is facing mounting scrutiny as more and more celebrities are undergoing dramatic weight loss, to the point that they begin to look almost skeletal.

The conversation has intensified around stars including Jenna Ortega, Ariana Grande and Kelly Osbourne, while the growing popularity of GLP-1 weight-loss medications has added another layer to the debate.

Many celebrities and fans have already started pointing out that the ultra-thin look that dominated parts of the 1990s and early 2000s appears to be making an uncomfortable comeback. But appearances alone can’t reveal whether a celebrity’s body has changed due to health, stress, medication, lifestyle changes, or grief.

Jenna Ortega’s bony appearance sparks concern after new interview

Jenna Ortega recently became the latest celebrity caught in the middle of the debate after her new interview. On August 11, 2026, the Wednesday star sat down for an interview with Esquire where she talked about her childhood in the entertainment industry, working with Tim Burton, and dealing with sudden fame.

However, much of the online conversation quickly shifted toward her appearance, with some viewers comparing her to Ariana Grande and expressing concern over how thin she looked. The discussion became particularly striking because Ortega also opened up about her unhealthy habits as a child actor.

She recalled being so afraid of inconveniencing people on set that she would sometimes go an entire day without eating or drinking. She, however, admitted that not prioritizing her health was a mistake. Ortega said:

“I wasn’t asking for a sip of water. I would go all day without eating, drinking, whatever, because I wanted so badly to not be in the way of anybody. Maybe that was my mistake; I was not actually looking after myself.”

While Ortega has not publicly said that she has an eating disorder or attributed her appearance to weight-loss medication, her comments have further fueled online discussion, even reigniting last year’s buzz about her buccal fat removal. None of the theories have ever been confirmed.

Ariana Grande has sparked serious health concerns after new music video

Ariana Grande’s seemingly deteriorating health has been in the talks for quite some time now. The singer has spent years dealing with public commentary about her body and has repeatedly urged people not to assume they know what is happening with someone’s health based on their appearance.

In 2023, Grande addressed comparisons between her current body and her appearance from an earlier period, explaining that the body people often described as her “healthiest” actually belonged to a time when she was struggling. Despite that, her appearance continues to generate speculation online.

The speculation peaked recently after the release of her Petal music video, where fans said the singer looked almost “skeletal”, once again debating her weight across social media. Some were worried, while others stood up for the singer, warning people not to speculate about her body.

Kelly Osbourne’s shocking weight loss and the heartbreaking truth behind it

Kelly Osbourne has also been under the microscope for her significantly thinning look in recent months, but sources have painted a bleak picture of her personal struggles. After the death of her legendary father Ozzy Osbourne in 2025, sources revealed that those close to Kelly were worried about her health, believing grief had affected her appetite.

Kelly herself has directly addressed the cruel comments about her appearance, making it clear that she has been struggling emotionally following her father’s death. She stated: “My dad just died, and I’m doing the best that I can.”

Osbourne has also been open about undergoing gastric sleeve surgery and her previous struggles with weight. She has denied using Ozempic for her recent weight loss, although she has previously discussed semaglutide and expressed support for people who use weight-loss medication.

Is the ‘bony look’ really back? The growing trend of GLP-1 drugs

The renewed focus on extremely thin celebrities comes after years of Hollywood embracing body positivity and greater representation. After a prolonged trend in the late ’90s that sparked serious, and sometimes fatal, health concerns, a revival emerged during the 2010s. Plus-size stars and campaigns promoting body diversity became increasingly visible, while the entertainment industry faced criticism for promoting unrealistic beauty standards. And now, some critics believe the pendulum may be swinging back.

The rise of GLP-1 medications has further complicated the conversation. Drugs such as semaglutide and tirzepatide have transformed weight-management treatment and become increasingly prominent in popular culture. Several celebrities, including Oprah Winfrey, Whoopi Goldberg, and Modern Family star Eric Stonestreet, have openly acknowledged using weight-loss medications. Others, however, have denied such theories behind their weight loss.

Regardless, while concern over Hollywood’s beauty standards may be legitimate, celebrities can experience weight changes for many reasons, and appearance alone cannot reveal someone’s physical or mental health.
