Sunny Deol has stepped into the shoes of the lead character, ‘Sikander Mirza’, and Preity Zinta plays the role of his wife, ‘Hamida S. Mirza’. Shabana Azmi is the elderly Hindu woman named ‘Durgavati Kishenpal Devi’, a.k.a ‘Mai’. While ‘Mai’ claims to be the rightful owner of her ancestral haveli, ‘Sikander’ is determined to get rid of the old woman. This unexpected encounter sparks rising tensions and emotional conflicts as both ‘Mai’ and ‘Sikander’ and his family navigate their transformed reality against the backdrop of the 1947 partition of India and the division of Punjab.
In a recent interview with NDTV, Sunny Deol elaborated on what to expect in the film, Batwara 1947. He shared that it’s a family film. Explaining it further, Sunny shared that he, as ‘Sikander Mirza’, and his family were happy when India got Independence, but things around them shattered when the country was partitioned. He also requested the Gen-Zs to watch the film. In his words:
“It’s a family film. All the films that Raj and I have done are relatable to society. The characters are very relatable as they are connected to the grassroots. This is a story of a family. Sikandar Mirza and his family were so happy when India got independence, but they were shattered when the country was partitioned. Things were so erratic; there was just disbelief all over. This film is a journey of this man and his family, who represent all families in the middle of Partition. Today’s generation needs to discover this (Partition), just like our old films Ghayal, Ghatak, and Damini. I request Gen Z and my fans to watch the film.”

The story it comes from was reportedly banned in Pakistan, yet what does the story actually talk about? A Hindu woman refusing to leave her home in Lahore.
