The Indian Medical Association (IMA), Andhra Pradesh State, has urged the State government to resolve the pending stipend revision for junior doctors, terming their demand genuine and calling for a fair settlement.
IMA AP president Dr S. Balaraju and honorary general secretary Dr Moturi Subhash Chandra Bose expressed solidarity with the ongoing agitation by the Andhra Pradesh Junior Doctors Association (APJUDA).
The IMA said the 15 per cent stipend revision due from January 1, 2026, had remained pending for more than seven months. Under G.O.Ms.No.287, dated December 17, 2009, junior doctors’ stipends are to be revised by 15 per cent every two years.
APJUDA has sought a 30 per cent hike, citing inflation, rising living costs, heavy clinical workload and disparities in stipends with other States. IMA leaders said APJUDA representatives had informed them that proposals for a three per cent increase for postgraduate junior doctors and five per cent for house surgeons and interns were discussed, but the doctors felt these would not adequately address their concerns.
The IMA said junior doctors were the backbone of government teaching hospitals, providing services in OPDs, wards, emergency departments, ICUs and operation theatres, often working long hours while pursuing postgraduate training.
The association appreciated APJUDA for continuing emergency and essential medical services during the agitation and protecting critically ill patients. It appealed to the public to understand that the agitation was not against patients.
The IMA urged the Health Minister to intervene and hold immediate talks with APJUDA, saying a prolonged agitation would serve neither doctors nor the public interest.
