A California high school football game between two Los Angeles-based teams took an unfortunate turn on Friday night.
The game between Compton High School (5-0) and Narbonne High School (2-3) descended into chaos in the fourth quarter, as a video of the teams engaging in a brawl on the field has surfaced on social media.
There’s no way of telling what caused the brawl from the video alone, as it was taken while both sides were being escorted back to their respective sidelines by coaches. Other reports indicate that it stemmed from a fight between players.
Narbonne’s frustration about the game’s outcome likely boiled over, as it was losing the game 34-6 when the brawl occurred.
Also of note is that the game’s referees apparently called for the game to end after the brawl instead of letting the final half-quarter or so play out. This was likely to ensure that tensions didn’t escalate further, given that Compton was clearly going to win.
This was not a good look for Narbonne’s football team, which is already under the microscope after having to forfeit its 2024 City Open Division championship and getting banned from postseason competition for three seasons last season, due to violations of CIF eligibility rules.
An investigation by the Los Angeles Unified School District and the CIF LA City Section found that Narbonne’s football program violated violated CIF bylaw 202 because multiple families faked residency requirements to gain eligibility for players on the team.
The football program also violated CIF bylaw 510, as it made improper contact with potential student-athletes before they officially enrolled at Narbonne.
It will be interesting to see whether this brawl includes additional consequences for either team.
