Nottingham Forest 0-1 Coventry: Sky Blues pick up first Premier League win in 25 years

Coventry City recorded their first Premier League win in 25 years following a narrow 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

Jay Dasilva scored the only goal of the game shortly after half-time to give Frank Lampard’s side a famous victory to lift them off the foot of the table and up to 18th.

For Forest, who saw a goal ruled out late on, they occupy 12th spot after suffering their second league defeat of the campaign.

Nothing to separate the two sides

Coventry came into the game having not yet found the net since their return to the Premier League. That showed little sign if changing in the early moments, with Jack Rudoni blasting high over the bar.

Frank Lampard’s side had another sight of goal a few minutes later when Brandon Thomas-Asante’s first-time effort from the edge of the box was saved by Matz Sels.

At the other end, Neco Williams fired a shot from range but it was straight at Carl Rushworth in the Coventry goal.

A 25-year wait comes to an end

Nothing could separate the two sides going into the break in what was proving to be a cagey affair at the City Ground.

However, just 10 minutes after the restart, history was made. From a long ball over the top, Dasilva nipped in behind Daniel Munoz before neatly lifting the ball over Sels to score his first Coventry goal, and the club’s first in the top-flight in a quarter of a century.

Lampard’s men, for the first time in the league this season, had a lead to protect – something Bobby Thomas helped preserve when he athletically cleared off the line to prevent a certain goal after Igor Jesus had clipped the ball over Rushworth.

With the atmosphere in the stands intensifying as the clock ticked past the 85-minute mark, the hosts thought they’d carved out an equaliser when Jesus pounced after Coventry’s Caleb Yirenkyi stumbled in his own box.

However, the VAR adjudged that Jesus had stepped on the heel of the midfielder and the goal was ruled out – much to the delight of the travelling supporters.

Forest failed to create any notable chances after that, as Coventry held on to pick up a memorable result and, crucially, a historic three points.
