Bhopal: A translocated Botswana female cheetah, CCB2, was on Sunday shifted to the Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh’s Mandsaur district from the state’s Kuno National Park.
Three-year-old CCB2 joins three translocated South African cheetahs, one female and two males, in the Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary.
The three translocated South African cheetahs were shifted to the Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary from Kuno a year and a half ago to develop the reserve as a second home of cheetahs in Madhya Pradesh.
CCB2, along with eight other cheetahs were translocated to Kuno from Botswana in February 2026.
Chief Minister Mohan Yadav released the translocated Botswana cheetah in the Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary on Sunday.
The Project Cheetah authorities have identified six-year-old South African female Nirva, who recently went untraceable for two weeks in the wild in the Kuno National Park due to a malfunctioning radio collar, and CCB2 to send one of them to the Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary.
CCB2 was finally chosen for shifting to Gandhi Sagar because she is younger than Nirva.
Additionally, this choice helps build a population using parents from different South African nations rather than from the same genetic pool, a senior forest officer said.
“Our focus is to build a diversified gene pool of cheetahs”, he added.
The Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary is now home to two female and two male cheetahs.
The combined cheetah population in Kuno and Gandhi Sagar stands at 56.
