Veteran actor Radha has approached the Greater Chennai Police Commissioner, alleging that signed blank cheques kept at her Chennai residence were accessed and presented for encashment in her sister Ambika’s name.
Radha alleges misuse of old cheques
A family property arrangement dating back nearly two decades has taken a fresh turn, with veteran actor Radha approaching the Greater Chennai Police Commissioner with allegations against her sister and fellow actor Ambika and their brother Mallikarjuna Kunjan Nair.
In her complaint, submitted on September 21, Radha has alleged that signed blank cheques belonging to her were taken from her residence and subsequently used in an attempt to claim around Rs 46 crore. The complaint also raises concerns over access to property, personal documents and valuables allegedly kept in the portion of the property belonging to her.
According to the complaint, Radha maintained an IDBI Bank current account for her business, which was earlier operated under the name ARS Garden Studio. She says she would keep a few signed blank cheques at her residence to meet routine expenses, including salaries, electricity and other utility bills, taxes and garden maintenance, particularly when she was travelling.
Radha subsequently changed the name of the business to RR Gardens in January 2025 and began using a new cheque book. As the older cheque book was no longer in use, she says she eventually forgot about the remaining cheques.
The actor claims the matter came to light on September 17, when she received communication from the bank informing her that five cheques from the old cheque book had been presented for encashment in Ambika’s name. Radha says she immediately instructed the bank to stop payment, maintaining that she had neither given the cheques to her sister nor entered into any financial arrangement with her that would warrant such payments.
Complaint also raises property access concerns
Radha has further alleged that the cheques were filled out by their brother Mallikarjuna. According to her complaint, the siblings acted together in an attempt to use the documents for financial gain. She has also alleged that the cheques were taken from her room without her knowledge while she was away from Chennai.
The complaint also brings the family’s long-running property dispute back into focus. Radha has alleged that she has been prevented from accessing her share of the property, where she says valuables, jewellery, property documents and other important records are kept.
The actor has requested the police to investigate the allegations and initiate appropriate criminal action if the charges are found to be established.
The dispute has its roots in a family arrangement made nearly two decades ago, when properties were divided among family members. The latest complaint suggests that the disagreement has now moved beyond questions of ownership and into allegations concerning financial documents and access to personal belongings.
At this stage, the allegations contained in Radha’s complaint remain claims and have not been adjudicated. The police investigation is expected to establish how the old cheques came to be presented, who filled them in and the circumstances under which they were allegedly accessed.
For Radha and Ambika, both established names who have enjoyed long careers in the South Indian film industries, the development marks a new chapter in a family dispute that has resurfaced after several years.
