Tirupati:The seventh day of the Srivari Salakatla Brahmotsavams at Tirumala was marked by processions of Lord Malayappa Swamy on the Surya Prabha and Chandra Prabha Vahanams on Monday.
The morning procession began at 8 am, with Lord Malayappa Swamy taken out on the Surya Prabha Vahanam. Devotees gathered in strength along the mada streets and chanted “Govinda” as the procession passed through. They performed Kolatam and traditional bhajans while mangala vadyams accompanied the procession.
The Surya Prabha Vahanam is associated with the Sun God, who is worshipped as a source of health and vitality. Devotees believe that having darshan of Lord Malayappa on the Surya Prabha Vahanam brings health, happiness, prosperity and well-being.
In the afternoon, the Snapana Thirumanjanam was performed for Lord Malayappa Swamy along with Sri Devi and Bhu Devi at the Ranganayakula Mandapam. The deities were given an abhishekam with milk, curd, coconut water, honey, turmeric and sandal paste.
The ritual was conducted according to Vaikhanasa Agama traditions, with Vedic recitations including the Purusha Sukta, Sri Sukta, Bhu Sukta, Neela Sukta and Vishnu Sukta.
In the evening, Lord Malayappa appeared in Murali Krishna alankaram on the Chandra Prabha Vahanam. As rain fell during the procession, Lord Malayappa was taken out under Ghatatopam, a canopy used to protect the deity. The Chandra Prabha Vahanam is traditionally associated with relief from the three forms of suffering described in Hindu scriptures.
The golden umbrella festival was also held at the main Kalyana Katta in the evening ahead of Tuesday’s Rathotsavam. As part of an old tradition, a new ceremonial umbrella is installed on the eve of the chariot festival. Historical records trace the tradition to the period of Sri Krishnadevaraya, while the use of a golden umbrella for the chariot has been followed since 1952.
Tirumala pontiffs Pedda Jeeyar Swamy and Chinna Jeeyar Swamy, along with TTD executive officer Muddada Ravichandra, Additional EO Ch. Venkaiah Chowdary, CV&SO K.V. Murali Krishna, board members and other officials participated in the ceremonies.
