Ed Sheeran’s cousin has denied claims he used the Shape of You hitmaker for “publicity” as he continues to struggle over the Macklemore backlash.
Jethro Sheeran, the son of Ed’s paternal uncle, has been vocal of his disdain for his famous cousin and branded him a “coward” after Macklemore was removed from the singer’s Loop Tour.
At the weekend, heartbroken Ed broke down in tears on stage during his gig as he apologised to fans over his “mistakes” and claimed his friends and family had “abandoned” him. All of the singer’s support acts chose to pull out of the tour when Macklemore was axed from the line-up following pressure from venue owners such as Robert Kraft. The Thrift Shop singer had sparked controversy after voicing his support for Palestine on stage.
Following his comments about Ed, Jethro – who is also a musician – revealed that he had been contacted by a number of news outlets for interviews and shared his publicist’s contact information. He also claimed to have received “kind messages” from his friends and family.
But his post on Facebook sparked anger among some, who accused him of using Ed for publicity. One wrote: “Best publicity you’ve ever had mate, and who knew all it took to get that was s****ing on your little cousin.”
In response, he shared a laughing crying emoji and wrote: “Lol honestly smh [shaking my head].”
“Literally don’t even have an answer because you know it’s true,” they hit back. “The ai art album cover photos and the rough rhymes weren’t working for you, it’s the next best thing. Use Ed’s name when he’s in the positive light or negative light as long as it gets you your extra ten streams on Spotify lol.”
It comes after Jethro ranted in a furious series of posts: “You can’t silence me! Ed Sheeran is a coward !! I’m embarrassed about this photo but it’s 10 years old!”
Jethro has also alleged that he supported the star early in his music career but later felt mistreated professionally and also financially. “He is shady and he’s dropped Macklemore himself I believe 100% he’s a coward,” Jethro fumed.
“In my opinion, he’s a bad human. Just my opinion from my experiences. I’ve known him all my life and started him in music, took him on my stage,” he added. “Took him to my first studio, rapped on his early songs, and did all I could to help him.
“Even when he was bullied at school. He only cared about himself, and he puts out fake narrative[s] that are calculated just to keep everyone happy so he can do big private gigs and keep brand deals.”
He concluded his message this weekend by distancing the rest of the family from his performer. “That’s my honest opinion, and I’m family!! He’s not a true Sheeran! Don’t hate on a Sheeran because of this silly little boy.”
His support acts and backing band pulled out of his world tour in reaction to rapper Macklemore being removed because of his comments about Gaza.
Shape of You hitmaker Ed told the crowd he felt “so much love” from the audience in Philadelphia. “I am honestly so grateful that you’re here tonight with me,” he said.
“This concert is still a place where everyone is welcome, and everyone here can stand beside people that have opposing views, and everyone here can stand by people that they don’t agree with on everything, but they can all agree on singing these songs.”
Ed said on stage that he had “so many people” telling him to cancel his tour in the aftermath of the controversy with Macklemore, but added he was buoyed by the support of his fans.
“I really didn’t know whether this tour would be carrying on,” he told the crowd towards the end of his show.
“I really didn’t know whether I’d be even getting on stage again, whether I even wanted to be an artist at all.
“In these situations, you really find out who your friends are, and it’s been a weird week. I just feel like it happened very quickly.”
