Dallas Cowboys legend Troy Aikman’s return to ESPN is still pending despite Joe Buck signing a new deal.
In 2022, ESPN managed to lure the dynamic duo of Troy Aikman and Joe Buck from FOX Sports, as it marked the beginning of a new era in the network’s football broadcasting team.

The duo has taken over Monday Night Football, with many considering them the best in the broadcasting business. Evidently, ESPN would love to have them on their network for as long as possible.
The intention was made clear when Buck signed a six-year, $108 million extension with ESPN. But this begs the question: Why hasn’t Aikman signed an extension?

There’s no doubt about Aikman’s skill as a color commentator. But even then, according to Front Office Sports, it doesn’t guarantee a new deal for the former Dallas Cowboys star.

“Aikman has to be next in line, right? Not necessarily, or at least not for a while, warn sources, even though both Aikman and Buck are represented by the same talent agency, CAA,” Front Office Sports reported.
They added, “Are the two sides talking? Sure. But multiple sources warn: No deal is imminent for Aikman.”
A key reason behind the delay is ESPN’s unwavering post-Super Bowl 2027 extension deadline for their analysts.
Aikman falls under that umbrella, and there’s a possibility he may explore his options outside of ESPN due to other networks’ top names potentially changing jobs.
