Hyderabad: AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi on Tuesday urged Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy to name the proposed Warangal airport after freedom fighter Syed Allauddin Hyder, also known as Maulvi Allauddin.Owaisi’s appeal came after Revanth Reddy sought suggestions from the public on naming the airport on September 19.
In a letter to Reddy, Owaisi said the airport site was originally developed in the 1930s during the Nizam’s rule to support industries in Warangal, including Azam Zahi Mills.
“I welcome your recent invitation to the people of Telangana to suggest a suitable name for the airport. In this regard, I request that the airport be named ‘Maulvi Syed Alauddin Airport’, in honour of one of the prominent freedom fighters from the undivided Warangal district who was associated with Hyderabad’s resistance to British rule during the 1857 uprising,” he said.
Allauddin, along with Turrebaz Khan, led the historic resistance against the British Residency in Hyderabad on July 17, 1857. He was subsequently captured and imprisoned in the Cellular Jail, Owaisi said. He said Allauddin’s contribution represented an important chapter in the history of Hyderabad and the freedom struggle in South India. Naming the airport after Allauddin would be a fitting tribute to his courage and sacrifice, he said.
The CM, on September 19, said the dream of an airport at Warangal was taking shape, with the required land having been handed over to the Airports Authority of India. “Looking forward to flying from Mamnoor Airport, Warangal-a new symbol of a growing and connected Telangana. What should we name Warangal’s new airport? Give your suggestions,” Reddy had said in a post on X. Reddy’s call for suggestions prompted several people to propose names for the airport.
Film director Sandeep Reddy Vanga, known for films such as ‘Arjun Reddy’ and ‘Animal’, suggested Rudrama International Airport or Kakatiya International Airport, citing the legacy of the Kakatiya dynasty, which was based in Warangal, and Queen Rani Rudrama Devi.
CPI leader K Narayana suggested naming the airport after former Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao, whose native village is near Warangal.
Union Coal and Mines Minister G Kishan Reddy said on September 19 that the Detailed Project Report for the proposed Warangal airport was under preparation and the layout of the airport buildings was in the final stages. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to perform the ‘bhumi puja’ for the airport, he said.
