Following the CDU’s run of defeats in three state elections in the last weeks, the debate over the political future of Chancellor Friedrich Merz is the talk of the town.
However, the CDU/CSU bloc maintains that it is focusing on how to continue the government’s reform agenda. As The Local has reported, the government, made up of a coalition between the Union and the SPD, is pushing for a number of major structural changes to the pension system, taxes and health insurance.

But some politicians are mulling whether to soften the course given the terrible show of support for the CDU in the regional elections. Terms such as a “comprehensive review” of policies and a “fresh start” are being talked about.
Thuringia’s state premier and CDU regional leader, Mario Voigt, described the election debacle as a historic turning point.
“We cannot carry on as before; what is needed is a comprehensive review of the Berlin government’s policies,” he said.
The fact that the CDU has been ousted from a state parliament, as has now happened in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, “is actually unimaginable”, he added.
The Union parliamentary group in the Bundestag has been meeting to address the consequences of the election results.
Nina Warken, Head of the Chancellor’s Office, promised stability and momentum. “There is no rejection of these reforms,” the CDU politician made clear. “Things must move forward.”
Meanwhile, a Forsa Trendbarometer poll released this week for RTL found that a majority of voters – 55 percent – are in favour of Merz stepping down.
Police probe suspected mercury contamination at DHL parcel centre
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding an incident at a DHL parcel centre in Leizen, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, after a delivery driver showed symptoms of suspected poisoning.
Emergency services were called to the site in the Mecklenburgische Seenplatte district on Tuesday afternoon.
Fire service specialists are determining which hazardous substance may be involved. The symptoms could point to mercury, a police spokesperson said in the evening.
“Investigations into the cause and further circumstances of the incident are ongoing,” police said.
Pilot hurt as US fighter jet crashes at base in Germany
A US fighter jet crashed at an American air base in western Germany on Tuesday, with the pilot ejecting and suffering injuries, the US air force and local authorities said.
The F-16 Fighting Falcon went down at around 2:30 pm at the Spangdahlem Air Base in Rhineland-Palatinate state, according to a statement from the base.
“The pilot ejected safely and is receiving medical care,” it said, adding that emergency workers had attended the crash site.
Local civilian authorities confirmed one person was injured. The incident is under investigation, US officials said.
Spangdahlem Air Base is home to the US Air Force’s 52nd Fighter Wing, which provides airpower and support for NATO operations in Europe and beyond.

Drone found near airbase may have been carrying explosives
A drone found near the Bundeswehr airbase in Wunstorf, Lower Saxony, may have been carrying explosives, according to an investigation by NDR, WDR and Süddeutsche Zeitung.
Investigators reportedly found suspicious material a few metres from the broken drone, although forensic tests have not yet been completed.
The drone, which was discovered about a week ago, is said to resemble those used in the failed attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport in August, with at least one component apparently made using a 3D printer.
Investigators are also examining whether the drone, which may have been at the site for as long as two years, is linked to the Leipzig incident.

‘New one’ Klopp promises fresh approach as Germany reign begins
Germany coach Jurgen Klopp has promised to bring a “new approach” to the country’s flagging fortunes, as the four-time world champions begin their latest tilt at a maiden Nations League title.
On Monday, just days out from his side’s opening match away against the Netherlands in Amsterdam on Thursday, Klopp recorded a video appealing to Germany fans at home and abroad.
Speaking English, the former Liverpool manager introduced himself as “the new one” in charge and thanked fans who “support us from all over the world”.

The “new one” quip was a tip of the hat to the “normal one” quote from his Liverpool unveiling which became intimately entwined with his nine-year Anfield stint.
Now back in the dugout for the first time since leaving Merseyside in 2024, Klopp has promised a “new approach” as he hopes to return the fallen giants to the summit of the game.
“We will try everything to make our new approach visible. I expect more immediately,” Klopp said Thursday.
“It might get a bit wild, but I’ll take that; it just has to be lively.”
After the trip to Amsterdam, Klopp will make his Germany home debut in Augsburg on September 27th against Greece.

First official FLINTA event held at Oktoberfest
More than 700 women attended the first FLINTA Wiesn event at Munich’s Oktoberfest on Monday.
The event, held at the Bräurosl tent, was organised as a celebration of queer women and LGBTQ+ visibility. FLINTA is an acronym in German standing for women, lesbians, intersex, non-binary, trans and agender people.
Organiser Sina Scherer said the event had exceeded expectations, with all 700 tickets sold in advance. The organisers plan to double the number of tickets next year.
