Joe Duttine has become a soap favourite on Coronation Street as Tim Metcalfe – but what do we know about his life away from the cobbles?
Actor Joe joined the ITV soap back in 2013 as Tim – and it didn’t take him long to become a hit with fans. The character’s also had his fair share of big storylines during his stint.
From his teenage grooming past to his marriage to Sally (Sally Dynevor), Tim’s time on the show has not been short of drama. Especially at the moment, as his troubled niece Lucy Parkinson (Anya Dewin) is living with him and Sally.
In real life, though, Joe lives a far less dramatic life. But who is his famous uncle? And when did he marry his cobbles co-star? Here’s everything we know about Joe Duttine.
What has Joe been in?
Joe is no stranger to appearing on TV screens. He made his TV debut in the series Between the Lines in 1992. Joe then went on to star in Pie in the Sky, The Time of Your Life, Silent Witness, and Serious and Organised, opposite Martin Kemp.
He also starred in Channel 4‘s drama The Village as Rutter and in Manchester drama Shameless, where he played Cameron Donnelly, the father of Maxine Donnelly (Joanna Higson) in 2010, a show his now-wife also starred in.
Joe’s famous family member
Joe isn’t the only actor in his family, as his uncle is acclaimed actor John Duttine. Joe’s father, Geoffrey, is John’s brother.
John has appeared in the likes of Doc Martin and Heartbeat, and made his name in the 1980 drama To Serve Them All My Days. What’s more, John even starred on Coronation Street back in 1977, playing Alec Barker.
It’s also been reported that Joe was stopped from using his real name, Johnny, and had to change it to ‘Joe’ due to his uncle’s success, to embark on his acting career.
Joe’s romance with Coronation Street star
Joe is loved-up with his Coronation Street co-star Sally Carman, who plays Abi Webster. Sally and Joe are thought to have started their relationship in the summer of 2018 and moved into a new home together at the end of 2019.
The lovebirds then got engaged in 2020, and after postponing their nuptials several times due to Covid, the delighted pair finally exchanged vows in July 2022. Sally confirmed the happy news with an image posted to her Instagram account, which she captioned: “We did.”
However, it isn’t very often you’ll see the pair together on-screen, and that’s the way Sally likes it. She said: “I give him a wide berth because he makes me laugh and once I’ve gone, there’s no getting it back and there’s tears.
“So it’s makeup retouching. I’m like, get it together, which makes it worse and it’s awful. He does it on purpose, so then I’m fuming with him.” Meanwhile, talking to OK!, she said: ” I’d be very happy never to have a scene with him ever again. I love Joe to bits, but I don’t like working with him – I’m never going to like working with him.”
Sally added: “Bless him, we’ve got very different work processes – let’s just put it like that. I like to come fully prepared and he likes to flesh it out on the floor. Also, he’s very funny. I’m such a giggler and once I’ve gone, I’m gone. It’s terrible and even if people get annoyed about it, it doesn’t help.”
She continued: “He absolutely makes me howl with laughter and he does it on purpose. I get cross with him because he knows the situation, but he can’t help himself.”
