Tim Janus dies after a long battle with cancer
Major League Eating confirmed Tim Janus’ death on September 20, 2026. They shared an obituary for the same and mentioned that the 49-year-old died from complications related to cancer after a prolonged battle with the illness. In fact, Tim, with his larger-than-life personality, continued to set and achieve new goals while dealing with severe health complications.
Before Tim’s diagnosis surfaced, he had been accepted into the United States Foreign Service. He was preparing for an overseas assignment. However, his declining health never enabled him to fulfill the goal. The people close to Tim recall him as someone who never allowed the challenges of life to define him.
After Tim Janus’ death was confirmed, several fans began to pay their tributes to him. They recalled their bond with the late competitive eater and shared some memories. For instance, Tim’s former roommate and fellow eating champion called him one of a kind and said:
“Tim followed his own passions and dreams without regard for the pressures or expectations of society. He was unique, brilliant, and beloved by his friends. He lived his life on his own terms.”
Meanwhile, Joey Chestnut, who competed against Tim for many years before becoming his partner on The Amazing Race, also recalled their unique bond. In his words:
“We started off as pretty much enemies, then the more we competed against each other, the more respect we had. We traveled around the country competing, learning… and learning to like each other.”
Meanwhile, a celebration of Tim’s life is expected to take place in New York City in October 2026. Several of the late competitive eater’s friends, family, and fellow competitors are expected to gather and honor his memory.

Tim Janus spent more than a decade of his life participating in competitive eating. Soon, he became a commonly recognized figure from 2006 to 2018. He often competed by wearing a Viking-inspired face paint design and mask. In fact, he became famous as “Eater X” and even reached No. 2 in the world ranking.
During his career, Tim collected many impressive records. He was crowned world ramen-eating champion after eating 10.5 pounds of ramen in less than eight minutes. He also got the title of nigiri Sushi eating champion after he ate 141 pieces in just six minutes. One of his most important appearances came at Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest. In 2014, he also ate 44 hot dogs during an iconic Fourth of July competition.
Eventually, Tim became a popular face on TV in 2018 after participating in The Amazing Race Season 30 with Joey Chestnut. However, they got eliminated during the fourth leg and introduced Tim to a wider audience. He also won USD 100,000 on Who Wants To Be a Millionaire and took home USD 1,600 in Cash Cab. He is now survived by his mother, Lucinda Hannon, and father, Peter Janus. Tim also had a stepmother, Nancy Janus, and a sister, Tess McNair.
