The actor-director, honoured at the 72nd National Film Awards ceremony held in Ekta Nagar, Gujarat, picked up his first-ever National Award for Direction for Raayan, the Tamil crime drama he both wrote and helmed in 2024. President Droupadi Murmu presented the honours at what marked the first time the ceremony was held outside New Delhi.
But it’s what happened after the ceremony that’s now doing the rounds online. Dhanush was photographed placing the medal around his mother Vijayalakshmi’s neck, capturing a moment so genuine it needed no explanation. Sharing the picture, he simply wrote, “All for that smile”.
The gesture followed an emotional scene at the ceremony itself, where Vijayalakshmi was seen standing up and craning to catch a glimpse of her son as he walked up to receive his award, a moment that had already gone viral before Dhanush even posted his tribute.
Accepting the honour, Dhanush kept his speech short but sincere. “This is my third National Award as an actor and my first National Award as a director. None of this would have been possible without my fans, the pillars of my strength. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”
The recognition came as part of a double win for Dhanush at this year’s ceremony. Alongside the Best Direction honour for Raayan, he also received a Special Mention for his performance in Captain Miller. Interestingly, his win for Raayan wasn’t without some chatter, with sections of the audience feeling films like Meiyazhagan or Maharaja may have deserved the top honour instead. Dhanush, though, stayed firmly focused on his achievement.
