Commanders players are up in arms over social media allegations they left quarterback Jayden Daniels high and dry after he dislocated his elbow Sunday.
Clips from the Fox broadcast posted online show several players walking away from Daniels toward the sideline after he was injured at the very end of the first half against the Cowboys.
Head coach Dan Quinn explained Wednesday that the referee told him he couldn’t delay halftime and that players had to get off the field, revealing Daniels’ teammates were “absolutely gutted.”
“It’s bulls–t what people are saying,” left tackle Brandon Coleman said, per ESPN. “Jay’s our guy and he’s been our guy. There’s no malice behind it.
“We stayed on the field and once they got it situated and did what they had to do we checked on him,” Coleman added. “Dan told most [players] to go into the locker room. But it’s tough to go in when you see something like that. You see the whole starting line out there, a bunch of receivers, some defensive guys.”
A separate clip posted by NBC Washington’s JP Finlay shows players gathered around Daniels as Quinn motions for them to head off the field.
One clip compared Commanders players walking away to Giants players all taking a knee after Jaxson Dart suffered a season-ending knee injury Monday night.
“All that stuff is ridiculous,” Commanders tight end Ben Sinnott said, via ESPN. “As far as the love and brotherhood we have for Jayden, it’s really strong. We’ve seen how hard he worked to get to where he’s been.
“It was a weird situation, people were trying to figure out what’s going on and they wanted to give the trainers space to do it. You don’t want to crowd the guy. Obviously guys are taking a step back and giving him space, praying, and we all came back.
“All that stuff is nonsense.”
It’s the second year in a row Daniels, 25, has dislocated his left elbow. It’s unclear how long he’ll be out, but he’s expected to return this season.
Injuries have derailed Daniels’ career after a Rookie of the Year campaign in 2024 in which he led the Commanders to the NFC Championship game. He had 3,568 yards passing, 25 touchdowns and nine interceptions during that regular season, along with 891 yards rushing and six rushing scores.
He was limited to seven games last year with a knee sprain and the first elbow injury, throwing for 1,262 yards, eight touchdowns and three interceptions.
In six quarters this season, Daniels has 260 yards and three touchdowns.
Marcus Mariota will start for the Commanders (0-2) on Sunday when they host the reigning Super Bowl champion Seahawks (2-0).
