Most of us met him as the man who brought Malgudi Days to life. Very few know he was a banker first.
Anant Nag was working at Union Bank of India while performing theatre in Mumbai, quietly building a career on stage before he ever faced a camera. He had already acted in Konkani, Kannada, Marathi and Hindi plays, and when he finally chose acting over the bank desk, there was no going back. That one decision carried him from Shyam Benegal’s Ankur and Nishant to the streets of Malgudi, and decades later, all the way to KGF.
Across more than 300 films and five decades, his style never felt like acting at all. His characters felt like neighbours, uncles, and people we had somehow always known. Now that familiar face from our television years has been honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2024, one of Indian cinema’s highest recognitions. Some actors don’t just perform. They become part of our childhood.
